I never really expected this to happen, but Norwich Sea Unicorn games and events in the Futures Summer league have become a bit of a source of news on goings on with UConn baseball.

I was told at a Sea Unicorn get together (my wife and I are season ticket holders) that catcher Matt Malcom, a catcher with Eastern Connecticut State University baseball was due to join the Sea Unicorns later in the summer season sometime in July. I was also told that Matt Malcom was also going to be a Grad Transfer to UConn this fall.

Like Luke Broadhurst, who recently joined the Sea Unicorns as an Assistant Coach for this summer season, Matt Malcom was quite an offensive player at ECSU. Check out Matt Malcom's stats below.

Reference to UConn at the end of this interview

Nice to have independent conformation of what I had heard about Matt Malcom transferring to UConn baseball. Wondering if a player pipeline might be developing between ECSU and UConn, similar to the one that Avery Point and Storrs had for many years. The only difference is that the pipeline could very well run both ways, as a number of UConn baseball players have transferred to Eastern in recent years to get some playing time.

-> Back home in Fiskdale on Sunday afternoon, Rizy made the decision to decommit from UConn, which he verbally accepted a scholarship offer from following his freshman year.

Rizy, who didn’t rule out ending up with UConn, said he has a list of five schools he is keeping “pretty private for now” and will wait until the fall to make official visits.

“I committed at such a young age,” he said. “I wanted to have no regrets in a sense and make sure I found the right spot for me. I want to be able to call a place home and have no regrets in that sense.” <-

Perfectgame.org has Mav Rizy rated at No. 100 in the High School Class of 2024.

From this article:

"After the game, mlb.com reporter Jim Callis singled out Rizy along with four other pitchers in the low-scoring affair, noting he consistently reached 7½ feet with his extension before releasing the ball."

In case it takes some of the sting out of the decommitment, it sounds like this guy is gonna be a very high draft pick out of high school.

It may just be my imagination, but it seems to have been a slow summer so far about hearing of recruiting commitments to UConn baseball. Perhaps things will heat up a bit as the summer and fall progresses. Of course, there could have been commitments, but they may not have been publicized.

The summer baseball team Nashua of the Futures League has listed on their roster a player named George Welch, a senior LHP. The roster lists his college team UConn. From what I can tell Welch has been playing for Southern New Hampshire University, and Welch's twitter page says that he is in the transfer portal, so it would seem Welch has just transferred to UConn. The Nashua roster so far is the only place I have found this mention of Welch and UConn.

There have been occasions in the past where a collegiate summer baseball team has first listed a player as transferring to another school.
