Two pivotal moments today. Getting nothing w/ the bases loaded and no one out early... you have to get something there; and the called ball on what should have been strike 3 on ECU batter. Who then lines the next pitch up the middle for an rbi, opening the scoring in what ended up being a 3 run inning for ECU.

We only scored 6 runs in our last 3 games. That's after the teams we were playing had already gone through their top 3 starters.

Getting out of today with 4 runs allowed in 8 innings was more than we could have hoped for. You need to score more as you go deeper into a tournament.

That having been said, that was a great effort by a team whose depth of pitching has been the problem all year, This was a deep, good baseball conference, and we were harmed more than our opponents by starting on the 2d day and then having the tourney compressed by a day. Next is a game less (max of 5, min of 3 to win). Bats need to pick up.

The NCAA first round is double elimination as well. As always, the longer you can stay in the winners bracket, the less games you potentially play, which of course helps any pitching staff, both in having rested relievers or finding additional starting pitchers.

While that's good news why do teams have to bid for a host spot?

The host school picks up a bunch of the financial responsibiities to host. In our case, a big part of the cost is to "rent" Dodd Stadium. Many schools do not want the financial aspect and/or do not have access to a facility that meets the requirements to host. That's one of the reasons Coach Penders wants the new baseball complex top meet minimum standards to host NCAA torunemants.
