If the kid makes a million dollars in an endorsement deal good for him. Who really cares what the players are doing with their likenesses outside of football? This seems like a whole lotta nothing to me.

I don't think anyone is passing judgment on the kid (I am certainly am not).

I am more concerned with the system that is being created. You are having 17/18 year old kids being paid large sums of money by Online Gambling and Sportsbooks who also employ the coach as well (and I'm sure are involved with agents/etc). If we all don't know where this is going to end up, then we are just being naïve.

I'd recommend not betting on games and just using the game as a form of entertainment.

The Barstool million dollar story is not real. It most likely was made up because FSU was so butthurt and didn't want to look like they just straight up lost the dude to Jackson State.

Where has there been anything that actually confirms he has a million dollar deal with Barstool?

I think these kids should go get their money where they can, but it is getting nuts from a competitive standpoint. Imagine the NFL with no salary cap. It would be a disaster

It's not like half the teams can compete already. The salary cap just gives the illusion of fairness.

We have very quickly slid down the "slippery slope" from the original NIL program into the deep end of the swamp.

You have a kid getting paid $1MM by the employer of the teams coach, and whose employer just happens to be a large Sportsbook operation.

It won't take long for this to get really ugly really quickly.

Yup. What's coming is going to be a level of ugly we could have only imagined a few years ago. I worry most about the kids being taken advantage. There is no way an 18 year old is ready to swim with these sharks.

The NFL is the most competitive major sport because of the salary cap
Uh huh, that's why essentially the same teams are in the play offs every year right?

Baseball is way more competitive now that the yankees can't buy championships every year.

But that is the problem. Should we view College Football as a form of entertainment (think WWE) or as true athletic competition?

The counter argument is tennis players, golfers, actors/actresses, musicians, etc are all thrown to the sharks by this age and survive.

I'd really like to see an emphasis on credentialing of agents and financial representatives "helping" broker these deals.

The kids that get through that will be the ones with a trusted group around them. Hopefully parents in most instances. Totally agree that the agents should be credentialed and subject to review. That's where the schools and NCAA would be best focused right now. I doubt they are as the schools are busy setting up schemes to get money to the best recruits and the NCAA is...........I don't know what the NCAA does anymore other than negotiate a bizzilion dollars for their hoops tournament.

Agreed. The other thing I’d add is that the original cases about NIL largely dealt with players being paid for outside work, one guy was making music videos as I recall another played one sport and got paid in another, basketball and got paid as a skier or something like that. It was not just getting cash to play at Jackson State. This will go one of two ways.
1. After the novelty wears off, this will mostly recede into a minor annoyance
2. There will be more than a few scandals of various sorts and some new system gets implemented to protect everyone. I can foresee some kid who got promised a $1 million in in NIL fees losing it all because he was utterly unprepared for it, or discovering that he isnt getting paid when he gets injured or benched and is no longer a household name or Doesn’t pan out.

At some point NFL light is going to collapse I think.

The schools and the NCAA should wash their hands of the whole sordid mess. You get screwed, sucks being you. And fwiw, they should also demand a payment to use the NIL of the university.

I can't think of any reason why a Black corner would want to play for a Black Hall of Fame corner at a historically Black institution. It's gotta be the money.

Gotta be the money LOL. Travis also wants to play WR in college too. Who better to play for than Deion?

The exposure will be there with the documentaries that are being made about each Jackson State season and although Barstool isn't going to give him an NIL deal themselves, I would imagine they have enough more than enough media contacts to be able to help the kid secure some money of his own.

Yeah, just let 18 year old kids get taken advantage of by shady agents and other handlers, especially those without strong parental support.

Not the schools’ problem. Honestly. Kids wanted to be able to get NIL money. They got it. Now deal with the good, the bad and the ugly. Look this is not some kid getting $100 for selling a music video on line or even getting a cushy job in the off season at the local car dealership, or getting paid for his artwork or heaven forbid, getting paid for unloading trucks at a local company owned by an alum. The NCAA outlawed all that stuff and it was stupid to do that. But these are essentially bribes. No standards, no real requirements to do anything. My advice to the schools would be stay away. Don’t ask, don’t tell. These are private deals. And what are they going to do anyway? First time they try to set a standard of some kind, even regulate agents, we are back where we were. What do you mean I can only get NIL through a registered guy? That nice Mr. Bulger offered me twice what those schmoo agents did and he didn’t even ask for a cut.

Seriously, what do you want them to do? And shouldn’t they do the same for the life sciences major who gets a job at Jackson labs and discovers a cure for cancer that Pfizer claims the patent on? Or the kid that gets a job at the local pizza joint to make a few bucks? These are essentially, if not bribes, “outside employment.” Just as they don’t interfere with some freshman who gets an off campus job at the local pizza joint, they shouldn’t interfere here. In fact, the kid working for minimum wage slining pies probably need MORE support than a guy getting $50000 or $100,000 or more a year with no tuition, room, board and book expenses.

I found the whole signing day dog and pony show to be idiotic. High school kids playing the shell game with hats in front of them, and ESPN seemed all too happy to show it. I thought it made for terrible TV. WGAF?!

I agree with this 1000%. For years it’s been going. Kids holding press conferences to announce their college choice. And a supposed major network showing it.

Wait what?!? Clearly you aren't a fan of a small market team. Baseball is the least competitive sport out there. The luxury tax is a joke. Football has the most parity and every season you see different teams with a shot. Even the teams that continue to have success don't have it because they stockpile top notch talent. You see that in baseball.
