On sports radio in Florida a big story is that the number 2 recruit switched to Jackson State and Deon Sanders after verbally committing to Florida State in early 2020. He also considered Auburn and Georgia. Barstool offered more than $1 million in NIL endorsements.

Sorry, I tried to make thread OT but fumbled.

Right. Nothing g to see.

Coaches can have outside income and players can make outside income.
We have very quickly slid down the "slippery slope" from the original NIL program into the deep end of the swamp.

You have a kid getting paid $1MM by the employer of the teams coach, and whose employer just happens to be a large Sportsbook operation.

It won't take long for this to get really ugly really quickly.

Anything that hastens the demise of the P5 cartel and the NCAA is ok with me.

This may be the last cycle where there's any semblance of a non-financial based recruiting process. It's going to ramp up quickly. On the other hand can't blame the young man one bit. Fandom is a genuine love for your University among some but one big ego trip for others.

What's to prevent a rich Connecticut car dealer booster from offering a top recruit $1M to do car commercials? Are there any constraints or is this already off the rails?

You certainly can't blame a young man like Travis for getting a piece of the pie. How can you stop that when you see coaches making $10 million or more a year?

I believe, going by all the things I've seen, that it's completely off the rails.

The schools allowed this to happen. As the money grew and grew they pay coaches more and more and never considered maybe coming up with a way to pay the players that made sense.

So in effect Deon got a $1 million bonus from Barstool and used it to buy Travis Hunter. I mean, what beats being able to drive a Lambo to practice as a freshman. Merry Christmas Everyone!

There were definitely options to consider 5-10 years ago. I had outlined increased expense stipends, family travel to at least 1 game along with trust funds payable upon graduation within 5 years. Those leaving early to turn pro would default on that fund. The exact amount determined by each League affiliation with a cap set by the NCAA for all FBS. Could gave staved this off for a long period and leveled the playing field somewhat.

You are describing a feature not a bug.

Nothing.

Other than the car dealer not wanting to be associated with crappy on field play.

Again, features, not bugs.

CT has a wealthy population disassociated from State U. That is the hurdle UConn needs to overcome to be a player.

Has this been proven legit that this kid is going to be making $1 million in NIL? Or am I misinterpreting this....if this is true, Alabama, Texas, and a couple other loaded donor schools are about to corner the market in recruiting.....whoa.

Not sure if proven beyond reasonable doubt. It was mentioned on the ESPN website as well as FAN sports on the radio yesterday. Deion now dispels rumors of the payout.

Right? SMU was way ahead of the curve in the early ’80s.

Dickerson took the Trans Am from A&M and then drove while playing for SMU.
