Sky Preparing To Move On Without Fowles

"Prepare for the worst and hope for the best" is an age-old management strategy, but not exactly the mindset a team wants to have going into a season. The Chicago Sky have had to operate in this mode, though, since last fall in regard to center Sylvia Fowles.

The Sky have been readying for some time to move on without Fowles, even though that's not what they would prefer. Fowles declined a contract offer last September, and negotiations -- if you want to call it that -- continued sporadically.

Neither Fowles nor her agent, Lindsay Kagawa Colas, have commented on her situation. Chicago coach and general manager Pokey Chatman confirmed this week that Fowles wants a trade and has a specific team in mind, but said that so far no trade offers for Fowles have been sufficient.

Fowles' fellow U.S. national team members Diana Taurasi and Candace Parker won't be in uniform when this WNBA season starts, and Fowles might not be, either.

The Sky started in 2006, and Fowles became the face of the franchise when she was drafted two years later. That altered somewhat when Elena Delle Donne was drafted in 2013; she was rookie of the year and a big part of the Sky's first playoff team that season.

Good to Better management prepare for the worst. Average management just keeps on doing what they've been doing---and getting the same results (there is a phrase or word for that). This too applies to HS, College, National or pro BB teams.

Sounds like there are some personal issues going on because Chicago is a good team with legitimate chance at Championship. I think Fowles has the upper hand to force a trade by refusing to sign with the Sky.

A trade to the Lynx would be a a step up for Minnesota, Maya , and Seimone. They then could compete with Phoenix better.

More than slightly worried that two Sky players have asked for trades this offseason. On the other hand, Quigley and Young both re-signed as unrestricted free agents. So I don't know if something's up with Pokey and/or ownership or if it's just Piph and Syl needing changes of scenery.

As long as Chicago gets more than a bag of chips in return, they will still be solid this year. Fowles is a huge, huge loss on defense but I don't think her offensive game was that much of an asset.

They just need a rim protector on defense and they will be fine on offense eliminating possessions where 4 people watch Syl try to beat a double team and instead replace them with good ball movement opening up the floor for Quigley and EDD to shoot or Sloot and Cappie to get to the rim.

Obviously, I'd still rather have her - she's a great player. But there will be life after Syl. Chicago started 5-1 last year with Goodlett at C and Tamera Young at SG.

If she ends up in Minnesota that would make the Lynx the favorite to win the championship, which they probably already are with DT sitting out. No Parker in LA and no DT makes life a lot easier for Minnesota.

One of my fondest memories is when UConn played LSU at their home---Kalli McLaren kept Fowles in check and was credited by Their coach as the difference that gave Uconn the victory. Best press Kalli ever got.

Macaulay Added to Chicago Sky Training Camp Roster

Free agent Victoria Macaulay has been signed to a training camp contract. Per team policy, contract terms were not disclosed.

“Victoria’s hard work, along with her athleticism, has truly aided in her continued growth on the offensive end of the floor,” said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. “I’m looking forward to having her compete for a roster spot during training camp.”

As an undrafted rookie out of Temple University in 2013, Macaulay made an impression overseas and earned an invitation to attend the Indiana Fever’s 2014 training camp. In four preseason appearances with the Fever, the 6-foot-4 center averaged 2.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
