Stewie put up 24 pts. and 16 rebounds. Her offensive repetoire is exciting to watch. Her grit is astounding.
Tina: 18 points and 6 rebounds..
Sue: 6 points, 6 rebounds, 10 assists.
KML: 10 points
Kiah: 11 rebounds, 2 points
Swin: 8 points, 4 rebounds

A very exciting and well played game. The Liberty eeked it out but it was tough. The Storm are just one player and a little consistency from their young players away from being a fearsome team.

If anyone continues to wonder why Stewie was named to the Olympic team they are blind to this shooting star. She is everything and as soon as next year will be totally dominant. She is regularly registering a double/double and in addition to being the runaway rookie of the year, she will likely be in the top five or six of the MVP voting.

KML had a good game - and not just long-range shooting. Looked like a basketball player. Maybe she just needs minutes. Storm almost came back from down 18, but Sue & Stewie missed some free throws at the end and Sue had a dumb turnover. Stewie played awesome beyond her years most of the game.

Wasn't it just so much fun watching so many ex-Husky's? No offense to any current WNBA player, but by her 3rd or 4th year Stewie's game will be state of the art. Pure Masterclass.

Stewie should win WNBA Rookie Of The Year ...

As of now that's not even a question. And that's nothing against the other rookies, several of which are having outstanding seasons as well (Moriah, Aerial Powers, Tiffany Mitchell, etc.). But Stewie is currently leading (!) the league in rebounds and is 6th in scoring. She has to even be in the MVP conversation, although Charles and Ogwumike are the clear front-runners.

Just finished watching the 2014 semi-final. UConn's lineup included the following:

Mo, Stewie, Stef, Kiah, Bria, and KML.

ALL are now in the WNBA. Wowzers! I wonder if any other FF team could say that!?

I doubt it. It's hard getting to the final four. It's just as hard making the cut on a WNBA roster as a rookie. There are lot of players that were on a WNBA roster last year, that are not on one THIS year. There are some players drafted in the 1st round last year that are not on a roster this season. A lot of players are signed at the beginning of camp. Either via the draft or free agency. Few make the final cut. Especially on teams like the Lynx and the Sparks.

We all (UConn Nation) knew Stewie was special, but nobody saw this coming. She has gone to Seattle and taken the city (pardon the pun) by storm. In less than half a season, she's become THAT player. The scary thing (for opponents) is that she's only going to get better. OMG :oops:Go Stewie - Go Storm.

You just have to go back one year to the 2013 Huskies. Eight of the eleven players are currently in the WNBA. ;)
Morgan Tuck, Kiah Stokes, Stefanie Dolson, Breanna Stewart, Kelly Faris, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, Moriah Jefferson, and Bria Hartley. Only Brianna Banks, Caroline Doty and Heather Buck are not. If Caroline Doty was healthy, she would also be playing.:)

Another mark of distinction was that each of those 5 players was multiple time AA as collegians.

It would be remarkable for any other school, but at UConn it seems to be the norm! Of course Morgan also played in 2014 at some point but not during the final four.

Here is a list of the total WNBA players that played during that year (at any point) on each team from 2001-2014. (due to injury some might not of played in the final four, etc)

2001 - 8
2002 - 7
2003 - 6
2004 - 6
2005 - 7
2006 - 7
2007 - 5
2008 - 6
2009 - 5
2010 - 5
2011 - 5
2012 - 6
2013 - 8
2014 - 7

As you can see the lowest number of WNBA players in any of these years is 5!
2001 had TASS, Diana, Kelly Schumacher, Svet and Ashley Battle! Also note that Shea would of played except for her injury!

Note that the '05 and '06 teams both had 7 future pros (granted not the top players).
This just reminds us of how incredible the program is, like we needed to be reminded!

Who are your starters? I assume we'd all have Maya, DT, and Stewie. Who are the other two?
By the way at sometime in Rio, Geno will have a lineup of Stewie, Tina, Maya, DT, and Sue, and no-one will complain, because in all aspects of they game they are good. You would have a frontcourt that rebounds, plays defense, passes the ball well, can shoot from anywhere, sets screens, plays fundamental basketball. In the backcourt, you have Sue, and DT, you don't have to say anymore.

Brianna Banks is also currently playing professional basketball, in Spain, as a Point Guard for the EMBUTIDOS PAJARIEL BEMBIBRE PDM basketball team. Same team as Ariel Edwards.

Haven't heard much about Stef and Bria lately.
They are having mediocre seasons, although playing alright within Coach T's system. Stef's points are down by a couple of points per game. She is not the force she was a year ago. And Bria is not seizing the moment as I hoped she would. Perhaps she'll break out at some point and be the kind of star player she looked like she was going to be when she was a freshman and sophomore at UConn and which her college career statistics would suggest. But, they are not doing bad, just not performing outstandingly.

I often think back to how amazing the Huskies might have been had the dynamic duo of Tiffany Hayes and Caroline Doty, the team's inside/outside combo, could have remained healthy and played together for four years. Can you imagine how much more effective Tiffany might have been had the unstoppable outside shooter Caroline hadn't damaged her knee? Doty was never the same after she severely damaged her knee freshman year at the end of the first half against Syracuse. Does anyone recall that she had 19 points (?) in that first half? Her last two years she was clearly far less mobile, and barely a shadow of the tremendous player she was becoming as a freshman.

Oh well....

On the other hand, Dolson is teaming up with an amazing up-and-coming talent in Emma Meeseman, the Belgian pro. While Stef's points aren't high, she is clearly opening up opportunities for Meeseman to score. The two are playing serious minutes together, and the tandem is proving effective for the team.

I don't think anyone should question her being on the Olympic team. Others? Yes. Big questions. It also shouldn't be a surprise to anyone that her offense is already this good. All of the game changers had great rookie outings...

Holdsclaw - averaged 17 pts as a rookie
Catchings - rookie debut of 23 points and averaged 18.6 ppg
Seimone A - averaged 22 pts. as a rookie and debuted with a 21 point game
DT - rookie debut of 26 points and ended the season averaging over 17 ppg
CP - rookie debut of 34 points and ended the season averaging over 18 ppg, garnering WNBA POY
MM - rookie debut of 21 points and averaged over 13 ppg, but on a star studded team.
EDD - rookie debut of 22 points and averaged 18 ppg

I try to look at these rookies in comparison to the NBA game changers. Those elite once in a life time players transition to the pros at the ages of 19 and 20 years old. They are usually the 1 college season and done type of players and they find much success in their first seasons with the individual statistics (Tim Duncan, Shaq, Derrick Rose, Lebron, Kyrie Irving, Blake Griffin, Anthony Davis, and the list goes on) .

The growth for these type of players comes in understanding the game, executing within the team setting, being a leader on and off the court, making their teammates better, becoming much better defensive players, playing just as well regardless of the opponent and even better in the big games, and other small nuances of the game that lead to winning games and not just filling up the stat sheet.

Scoring for Stewie and grabbing rebounds against the pros is no surprise at all. She belongs in the discussion of elite, game changers and these type of players are never the question when it comes to the Olympics.
