As he joins Chuck Neinas on the list of "big-name, high priced consultants to screw UConn"

There will always be the question of whether Pitt and Syracuse would have defected if the Big East had signed that ESPN deal in May 2011. The answer is likely yes, as the there's seemingly nothing that could stop the gale force of realignment. The decision to reject the television deal looks foolish in retrospect. At DeGioia's suggestion, Georgetown Board Chair Paul Tagliabue was brought in to consult on Big East matters. He famously insisted, "We can manage the risk," when convincing officials to take the league to the open market. The Big East couldn't manage the risk. It fell apart within 18 months.

Interesting Comments
Not one GT comment on the role they played in killing the BE.
Yet JTIII in his postgame and the fans on there board blame Syracuse and even UConn for killing the BE.
Would it have survived if GT+their cronies, Pitt, and ND didn't kill the TV deal? Who knows?
But I will never forget the way blame was deflected and the attempt to destroy us.
Their attemp a being potrayed as the good guys.
We're down now but all are former conference mates (except Rutgers&WV Maybe) better hope that they are never in a situation were they need our help.
Connecticut Yankees have long memories

you guys need to remember that for 14 of the 17 big east schools, turning down that deal was a great idea.

Yes, on its own going to the open market for a television contract was not a bad idea. Where MT ultimately damaged the then conference as a whole was in his belief that placing a school from a large metropolitan area into a major conference (the ridiculous Nova upgrade proposal) would work the way that an expansion NFL franchise works.

The then leadership of the conference, emboldened by the belief that having the former NFL commissioner as a consultant made them better equipped than any collegiate conference could possibly be, destabilized football even more than it had been up to that point. There was really nothing keeping the conference together once the Villanova to BE football premise became a cornerstone of conference expanaion.

Is the Nova football upgrade plan now dead?

That remains to be seen. We don't know what the bball money was, might have $13m. Right now, the total money was similar to what the ACC is getting, but $4 million less than they will be getting. We don't know how this will impact their play. Rutgers definitely made out. We don't know about the others yet.

What are you talking about? The basketball schools were going to get around $3MM per school in the ESPN deal where Fox will pay around $5MM per school and the basketball schools have conference stability for the first time in 2 decades.

Rejecting the ESPN was a brilliant move for everyone but UConn, Cincinnati and USF. There is nothing that remains to be seen.

Fox is paying no one $5m per. It's $3.3m, or $40m for 12 teams.

didn't say it was news. . . .just making sure he's prominent on the bad guy list. Kind of like bumping " Jeff Hathaway" to the top after an inexcusable football loss.

Not only did it work out for most of the members, but if it was signed everyone would have bailed anyway and it would have bee n voided by the network.

But we might have collected even more in exit fee money.

This is the what Boeheim and Calhoun, and everybody else are missing the boat on.

This.

I don't think it was a horrible decision, it was just poorly excuted. Once the deal was turned down, ESPN was likely to pressure teams to leave the league. MT had to say, if you turn down this deal, we need a way to lockdown membership and by the way, if you accept this deal, we still need a way to lockdown the membership, otherwise we're sittting ducks. Maybe a short term GOR just to survive the storm that was coming.

Can't agree enough with Biz that an ESPN deal that would have left us worst paid of the Big 6 with the worst coverage, would have left us extraordinarily vulnerable. I'm not sure that accepting it changes anything.
