A very classy guy of my generation said good bye to competition in The Open today. One of the pillars of the sport. Classy crowd, late in the day, hailed him again and again. It was special.

Easily the greatest links player of the modern era. I still remember the extraordinary performance at Muirfield - I know he didn't win but IMO he still 'shocked the world' ! A legendary weekend.

The game is poorer for his absence.

Always a top competitor in his prime, Tom Watson is a gentleman and a true champion. So happy to see him given a warm send off by the fans and players.

In the legendary "Duel in the Sun," the great Jack Nicklaus, then in his prime, shot 65-66 on the weekend at Turnberry. He would finish 10 shots ahead of the field. Well, all of the field except Tom Watson, who beat Jack's score with a historic 65-65 finish to win by 1. Five years later, Watson would steal another major from Nicklaus by holing out from a gnarly lie at the edge of the Pacific Ocean at Pebble Beach. Beating the best allowed Tom to make his own mark on the game. His 8 majors put him 1 ahead of Gene Sarazen, Sam Snead, and Arnold Palmer.

We will get to see our "Old Tom" at one more major, the Masters in 2016.
