    16. Based on your hint, I assume the answer is George Wallace. I interviewed him years ago, near the end of his life, for a book I was writing. It was the strangest experience. He lived in a modest one-story home in Montgomery, Alabama, in a neighborhood with lots of young children playing in the yards and streets. He was confined to his bed and had around-the-clock care. There was a big TV mounted at the foot of his bed, and he spent most of his time watching CNN. His voice was weak, and I could barely hear what he said, but I put my tape recorder on a stand in front of his face, and it picked up his words. I think he was an opportunist who would do anything to climb to the top in politics. Earlier in his life, when he was a judge, he was actually known for being sympathetic to blacks. He apparently adopted his despicable anti-black rhetoric to curry favor with white voters when he ran for office. Late in life he renounced his segregationist views, but it was always hard to figure out how sincere he was in anything he said. His words and actions when he was governor were very harmful to blacks and contrary to fairness and liberty.
