Tonight the Arizona Softball Team beat Wright State 22-1. We scored 3 in the 1st, 15 in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd. The game ended after 4 1/2 innings by the mercy rule.
I was pleased to see good sportsmanship from Arizona beginning in the 3rd inning - the 4 runs were primarily produced by non-regulars who were pinch-hitting (with a bunch of walks thrown in) and runners who advanced to 3rd that might normally have scored on a play were held there whenever possible.
In the 4th inning, 3 players in a row advanced to 2nd base (due to walks and singles) and all 3 "left the base early" when the next batter was up and were called out. I thought it was a nice way to prevent additional scores, at the same time without adversely affecting a player's stats (there isn't a stat for "called out for leaving base early").
And the fans in general were very pleased to see this as well.
