A newbies ambitious attempt at a pre tournament mini scouting report of our team

My qualifications
- Seen every televised UCWBB game over last two years. Most games at least twice, many 3+
- Avid boneyard devotee

The Starting Five and Geno

Breanna Stewart "stewie"

Strengths

- the most dangerous/ talented women's college basketball player
- match up nightmare.
-developing jump hook
-better this year in using movement to get position in post.
- nice mid range game , that she doesn't utilize enough due to fondness of shooting threes
- ability to raise game performance on bigger stage.
- unselfish:) sometime to a fault.
- length and smarts allow her to not just wait on blocks to come to her but to chase down blocks
- steady rise throughout the year in rebounding effort. Spending less time on perimeter more time inside which is good.
- clutch at the line when it counts

Areas of concern

- With minutes lowered and now having a true bench., stewies scoring has taken a dip but any true observer knows she is becoming better all-round player. As diana taurasi has said "look not one going to beat Uconn this year but if you are going to get them this is the year to do it because next year she will be Elite and NO ONE will catch them".
- Three point shooting has regressed a little. This can be a danger point, as stewie can sometimes get out of sorts when early threes miss the mark. She uses the three pointer like a male player uses dunks to boost up their game. For stewie the three pointer is the dagger weapon of choice. It lets her relax and let game come to her. If she is hitting threes early you are in trouble.
- teams more so then ever before have gone to being overly physical with stewie. Collapsing more quickly on her with double teams. Multiple players sometimes foul her multiple times on one play. Due to stewies laid back personality and the normal score disparity, refs get let off the hook for not calling the game correctly?
- sometimes against perceived lesser opponents and shots not falling early, stewie can fade out the picture. IE last year first half BYU. Responded well to dolson calling her out. Tim Duncan like in coach-ability.
- must be careful as I think teams will adopt south Florida strategy of soccer like flopping against Breanna in tournament.

Kia Nurse

Strengths

- rare poise and composer for a freshman .Performance and tenacity forced her into starting line-up.A true rarity on a Geno team.
- aggressive head down/ ferocious when driving to basket.
-high effort player
- bigger guard cannot out muscle her or look to post her up
- Deceptive (almost sneaky) three point shot. Above average Good arch
- quick to get on floor . will win more 50\50 balls then loses
- quick study can adapt to in game changes. Shares starting 5 high BB IQ but does it as a freshman.

Areas of concern

- Has admitted herself is mentally tried. Played a lot this year (team Canada etc) Most worried about kia in tournament.
I believe expectations by uconn fans should be more tempered?
- Speedy smaller guards can cause her some difficulty. If team has player like this who is not not their best player kia could become a target. (MoJet usually covers best scorer)
- Below average at feeding ball into post. Hasn't yet master nuances of getting ball to players in their sweet spots
- doesn't take full advantage of her drives with little shaky foul line performance.
- Can only play with hair up :) :)

Moriah jefferson

Strengths

- The most exciting player I have seen this year. Is a blur with a gear shift. Like a pitcher she changes speed to keep you off guard.
- Player huskies can least afford to lose too injury. She is the engine of uconns machine. Mo I believe is the one player that catches opposing coaches off guard when facing uconn. They have heard about the speed and the fury but not until they see it live do they fully realize the major problem she presents.
- Elite defense player.A one player press. Given responsibility to cover opposing teams best non big.
- capable of taking top scores out of game to the point of concession. (just ask shoni)
- personally responsible for more then 50% of huskies team speed
- above average three point shooter. Teams back off her due to fear of the blow by and lingering lack of respect. Most uncontested threes on team.
- protects ball and doesn't turn ball over
- keeps everyone involved. True PG
- good vision and anticipation. Routinely will pick passes out of air.
-Breaks traps and doesn't rattle.
- Always good in maintaining good defensive stance. Gives her ability to be aggressive without fouling.
- Good at the line.

Areas of concern

- not her fault but players think they can catch her on a breakaway when they cannot. This causes moriah to spend a lot off time on floor. Small frame takes a lot of hits out of opposing players frustrations.
- still is susceptible to bouts of self doubts. Like stewie if early open shots don't fall offense can dip but defensive will remain. ( bad offensive performance in last years championship but superior defense more then made up)
- refs must be on lookout for opposing teams use off illegal screens to slow her down and separate her from their player. Two of our players teams will get chippy with will be Mo and stewie. Refs can't let this get out of hand.

Morgan tuck

Strengths

- Most complete unconn player. Morganmentals rarely makes mistakes.
- Mastered signature moves in post. Best use of backboard of any of Uconn player.
- efficient with shots. Good both with right and left.
- loves to get ball from foul line to top of the key area. Will then use devastating drives (mostly to right) to get ball to the hoop . Her understanding on how to seal players and positioning is really fun to watch.
-up and under off glass while using basket as a protector is another signature tuck move .
-underrated passer.
- gives off a quite confidence and demonstrates a composure that is very reassuring as a fan
- average three point shooter but makes enough to punish teams that don't want to play up on her.
-opened a lot of eyes that didn't know how good she is with performance at Jimmy V Notre Dame game. She was the best player on the court that day and was a one girl wrecking crew that sucked the life out of the Irish and their fans.(stokes was ok too:)
- teams who haven't played her this year will quickly learn that "tuck rules" (ask muffet)

Areas of concern

- with her skill set she sometime surprises you with average rebounding
- I have no explanation ( this is probably just myself) but sometimes has long stretches during games where she seems unnoticeable? You will look at stats and it will be respectable but you can't remember her doing it?
- No Geno player at this time of the year would be labelled as foul prone.Right or wrong morgan is probadly the weakest link for foul trouble on starting five that doesn't foul. It could be due to stewies green light to freelance (will come out to get guards) leaving morgan to pick up roaming bigs. (kind of a nitpick here)

Kaleena mosqueda lewis

Strengths

- I believe outside of Uconn (sometimes within) the MOST underrated truly great Uconn husky.

- Known for being best college three point shooter but her best asset belittles her true game.

- IMO? Over the last two years the team that gave Uconn the biggest scare and best game was BYU in the tournament last year. With 6'7 Jennifer Hamson giving stefanie fits and fearless group of BYU shooters, unconn was truly on the ropes at times . So who saved the day and kept huskies head above water??? KML. Keleena was everywhere leading team with 13 rebounds ( EIGHT offensive )and 19 hard fought points (only one three mostly all in the paint). It was her best all round game as a husky.
At the end of our tournament stefanie was our heart, stewie was our best player but KML was our MVP. (hey I still have every tournament game on dvr)

- The personality of our team is defined by the women who compose it, which is best described as NICE. An by definition nice is to be pleasing; agreeable; delightful: . This doesn't always make a good attribute in winning basketball games ( it does however make this a team that is close to my heart:) So what does this mean in terms of KML. She is nice but she has one attribute above all of her other teammates. That is "TRUE GRIT" or as Geno would say kaleena is the one player not afraid to mix it up? Hey I understand this is not the men's game and I am not looking for testosterone but a little taurasi moxie can make a difference.
I digress. Just pet peeve on the false perceptions of kaleena

-Best passer on team . Facilitates a great two player game with stewie

- Above average rebounder. When game gets more physical in tournament no one is more willing to dive into the the scrum then keleena . (yes I know GABBY) KML is a undercover banger disguised as a three point specialist:)

- Uconn uses kaleena as the spirit breaking weapon.Whether she is quickly responding with a quick three after a opponents big basket or she is the finishing touch on a signature Uconn run. KML is the backbreaker

- deceptive quickness. Enables Geno to slide her over to guard when he wants to go big up front (stokes etc) Good ball handler.

-Has a pretty shot and quick release point that leaves her hand in same spot every time. This translates into few block shots and chances of prolong slump almost nil. No other WBB player can match this ability.

- According to teammates Highest BB IQ of them all? If stewie is in a funk, morgan will talk to her but KML will get her going on court. True lead by example senior leadership.

- Great foul shooter but rarely gets to the line.

Areas of concern

- Speedy slashing wings and guards pull her out too drive on her. Stanford?

- because of uconns balance, Kaleena didn't face a lot of face guarding or tight coverage? I think some coach will look at St johns game where they did decide blanket KML and it seemed to bother her

- not her fault but has been more susceptible to getting injured. Like I said not afraid to get in scrum so this comes with territory.

Geno auriemma

Strengths

- Not enough of America knows it but one of our nations treasures

- IMO one of greatness coaches of my lifetime

- CHRIS DAILEY

- CHRIS DAILEY

- Marisa and Shea

Areas of concern

NONE:)

Thanks fellow Boneyarders

Will try finish up bench but I'm tried
