The sad part of the SEC threads is that even most of the posters mocking the rumor think there may be a kernel of truth to it. We are running after mirages.
Kernel? Maybe. I find it very, very improbable. Only the Pac would be even less likely to happen. As such, it makes for harmless, fun speculation. I sense a very different tone to these posts than the ones where several people convinced themselves we had turned down the ACC because a B1G invite was in hand.
This is more of a "what if" exercise, and in the process we find it isn't much more crazy than GT to the B1G, which so many think is happening or being seriously considered. The ACC needed football image. The SEC does not. It needs basketball for the new network and new eyeballs. UNC perfectly suits their needs and they could live with Duke. UVA would be a good fit as well. You heard the FSU president say that they don't bring what the SEC needs...confirming that it isn't football power or existing markets. Extrapolate that, and you get a list that looks like UNC (+Duke if requried), UVA, Oklahoma (+maybe Kansas) and UConn. I'm assuming they couldn't get Texas.
The B1G wanted Rutgers when the ACC did not. I think that confirms that what each conference wants and needs is different. That said, culture remains a big hurdle.
