Maya Moore, Diana Taurasi, Jamele Elliot, Kelly Faris, Stefanie Dolson, Shea Ralph, Svet Abrosimova, Tiffany Hayes, KML, Moriah Jefferson, and so on, certainly went more than 100 miles from home.

Oh, sure, Alex - after all, it's a probability, not an individual absolute. I think, in general, the stats for the truly national programs - UConn, Tenn, ND, Stanford, Duke, and the fluid list that might include Baylor, U of L, UNC, MD, etc., etc. - for those schools, the stats might be different. I'd also be interested to see if there's a breakdown between, say, top "10" recruits, and numbers 11-25. Do the truly elite recruits, potential game-changers, have similar geographic tendencies as 1-25 as a whole, or do the "top ten" go a little further from home?

9 out of 25 is only 36%, I wouldn't call that "most" of the recruits...

Article says top 25 are "the most likely" to stay within 100 miles, not "Most stay...."

Based on Title on the Following statement in the article.
  • Although Top 25 recruits are the most likely to stay within 100 miles of home, 3 will be traveling more than 2,500 miles to college (only one other domestic Top 100 recruit traveling that far)

These players don't apply to the report. They are examining 2014 players only.

Yea, you read that wrong. The top 25 (9) are more likely than the 26-50 (4), 51-75 (6) and the 76-100 (5). Not ....OF the top 25, most are likely to go close.

Actually just the opposite of your Title, Most Top 25 Recruits will go further than 100 miles of their home.

Kinda cool report though.

That's the point. Sometimes, these kinds of things get reported as if it some sort of trend. That's why I provided historical counter-examples. Kind of like every time there is a claim there is parity in WCBB every time UCOnn doesn't win a national championship. That's when I like to provide other sorts of historical counterexamples...like 1995, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2009, 2010, 2013, and 2014.

Well let's see for UCONN

Williams - 2817 miles (Reno, NV)
Edwards - 46 miles (Meriden, CT)
Ekmark - 2561 miles (Phoenix, AZ)
Nurse - 775 KM (she's Canadian, eh?) (481 miles) (Hamilton, ON)

(per Google maps)

Since I've been following Duke WCBB.... I can only recall two scholarship players (regardless of ranking) who lived less than 100 miles from Durham..... thats over a period of 17 or so years. Only 3 players total from North Carolina. Chante Black (Kernersville), Joy Cheek (Charlotte), and incoming freshman Azura Stevens (Cary).

What's interesting to me is that the top 25 are the most likely to stay home AND the most likely to go far away. I would speculate that this is because they can go wherever they want. A #90 recruit may not be recruited by the top teams even if they live next door, and they may not have the opportunity to be noticed by the teams on the other side of the country.

The young women who have built this program were brave enough to leave home because they wanted to push themselves to be the very best and join the UCONN family. I don't think this research takes into account the "UCONN effect". Breanna's just one of many, many recruits who have left "home" because of the UCONN brand that Geno and Co. have built.

"There aren't a lot of maybes with Stewart. She is the best player in her class, has proven herself against the best players in the United States and abroad, and she is committed to reaching her potential as a player. She has Olympic aspirations, including trying out for the U19 national team this spring, and she is positive that Connecticut is the right setting to make her goals happen"
