Crawford is meeting with Cherington today on the surgery option. Crawford has a 7 year contract and the Sox are going nowhere this year so it is best for everyone that he has the surgery now. Crawford should be close to ready for the start of next season.

Well. That's two completely useless and expensive seasons.

There are literally 3+ guys on Sox whose contracts render them absolute albatrosses. Unless they truly blow everything up next year is very likely to be more of the same, best case is the charade enables them to compete for a wildcard into late August/September, but a blowup and buying out Beckett, Lackey and Crawford would be the only way to change direction now and start rebuilding a championship team vs year 3 of 'bridge' to nowhere seasons.

And another bad contract was Dice-K. With a decent first half, you may have parlayed him into a pick or a decent little role player. Instead, he gave you nothing all year and he'll leave without you getting him anything in return.

Not having to suffer through a 4hr DiceK pitched ballgame is plenty in return for him leaving.

You gotta figure the greatest pleasure for owners/GMs of small market teams are deals like the Youkliss one when the big market bullies are forced to dump a player and they get him essentially on scholarship from old club and the guy plays with a grudge. I expect tonight the Yankees will resume their strategy of plunking Youk between the letters every other at bat.

Don't forget to add Beckett to that list.
