The ratings of the games in the new conferences will be higher than the ratings of the games in the PAC-12. Higher ratings = higher charge for commercials = more revenue for the media partners.
Is that not collusion then? I feel like there could be some sort of lawsuit

How is it clear we have value? When nobody is buying a product it’s usually considered not valuable.
At this point, value is a given. There is no need for proof. It is a given, for example, because you have the leader of a major conference stating that football is no longer the only game in town. Basketball demands consideration. OK, who's important there? The schools that are good. How do you determine that? Whoever wins the championship is the best. Who won the championships? Over the last quarter century, we have the most. Ergo, Given: We have value.

Sales (realignment) aren't concluded yet. Pros and cons are still being debated. The landscape is still being shaped. New bidders keep entering the market. Whenever a house is listed for sale, it doesn't mean its value is zero just because a transaction hasn't been concluded.

Ok I hear you and you make valid points but at the end of the day it’s not like this is our first go-around in the “sales” cycle. We’ve been dismissed multiple times over the past 2 decades. You can’t discount that.

I had a two year old that refused to sleep last night. In my delirium I was twiddling on my iPad and went through a thought exercise on what UConn's media gross revenue could realistically be (I am in no way, shape or form connected to media in any capacity, fyi, and really don't know how this works) assuming we got an AppleTV linear only UConn Network type deal.

My thoughts were this, and before you sheet all over, I know this might be pie in the sky:
1.) 40% of global Alumni would sign up for this network/service (100,000 individuals)
2.) 3.0% of the CT State Population would sign up for the service (100,000 individuals).

For ad revenue, my source is this:

A few more variables:
I assumed 14 minutes of ads per hour (average), which makes for 28 30 second slots.
I assumed MBB draws the average Cost per 1000 30 second views per ad ($47.14)
I assumed WBB draws $30 CPM
I assumed FB draws $50 CPM

I have no idea how home versus away game rights would fit into this equation., but more than likely it would reduce the number. When you add in all other sports (hockey, baseball and soccer at least), I would assume this would bring it back to within the ballpark of what's below.

UsersCost Per MonthGross Revenue

When you factor in production costs and profit margin requirements for the network/streamer, I would think we should net $30mil, right in the zone of B12 numbers.

On to my next cup of coffee.

Thank you for the effort. No sheeting from me.

This type of analysis is what must be done by analysts to determine proposal viability. I’m sure your numbers are not totally accurate but they must be in the same ballpark. I think when compared to other school there’s no doubt we rate great.

But that does demonstrate the effect of “political” type issues. BC block, Fox prefers bargain of Big East, etc.

Users would be higher. The women’s basketball team has a large national following.
And many people would drop the service when the sport they watch isn’t in season.
I love to be able to stream only us and not be forced to pay for the sports networks or conference channels.

Nice job. I honestly believe this is the way to go for UConn in the future.

I believe every big school will realize this at some point. What's the point being in a conference when Ohio State gets the same payout as Northwestern and Rutgers?

For someone like me, I honestly don't give a crap about other schools other than watching UConn content. I would love to subscribe to an UConn channel while dropping some other streaming services.

Streaming tech companies can make this a reality quickly. They just need to push this concept hard and get a few schools like FSU to jump aboard. I think the concept would be perfect for UConn.

I know nothing about streaming and all the numbers you posted...but I was wondering the same thing.
Is there a way to have us do us?

It tends to be a bad negotiating position to piss off the people you're actually asking for something. In this case, insisting on UConn versus say Pittsburgh, would not have cost them a dollar and would have created good will. That's the low hanging fruit of negotiation.
Maybe this guy can make a correction on all that (regarding ESPN) .........

Honestly I have no idea how this is not even a thing anymore. When people tell me they still have cable boxes I look at them sideways. Even if you load your streaming services to mirror the same thing as linear cable you still save like 20 to 30 bucks a month.

Some guy on here said he gets everything but CBS Sports net on linear cable for $59 a month. Now, granted that 59+ cable box fees and taxes etc., but still that's pretty decent. I checked locally and it is $80 for cable that has everything we needed for UConn games, before cable box fees, taxes etc. so, for me, it's not worth going back to cable, but it is priced more competitively than it used to be.

Hulu live is $69 for everything.

I wish. One would think it has already been said in the margins, so either ESPN doesn't care, or they're not looking for any tax relief in the near future.

Much of it stems from a few with an axe to grind, not a general consensus. Some of it saw others slightly cuter than us and were available. Some of it pure prejudice; we're not in a P5 therefore we're not worthy of P5. And a not insignificant part was us bungling things.

Our governor needs to be in touch with governors from states represented in the Big12, ACC, as well as Charlie Baker, former Mass. governor who now heads the NCAA. And a few firm telephone calls to Bristol-based ESPN would help too.
Maybe call ESPN, but, politically, I wouldn't think Lamont has any allies in Big 12 country and maybe a few in ACC country.

It depends where you live too. In much of rural America, high-speed internet is not an option yet. They either have spotty connection, slow connection, or no connection at all. Same with cell phones. Despite what those maps show on advertising for cell services, there are many rural places that do not currently have an option for cell service at home because there are no towers near their home. They use their cell phones when they are away from home (work, shopping, etc.). This lack of infrastructure in rural areas will have to be addressed before traditional cable boxes (and analog phone lines) can truly be eliminated.

Hockey East's commissioner was trying to get UConn to join since the 1990s. It was all done from the top.
Correct, the league was interested in UConn for a long time. The problem was UConn wasn't serious about investing in the program until the mid-2010s.

I remember reading a report submitted to UConn's leadership in the late 2000s that asked each program to audit its facilities and financial support and determine if it was sufficient or needed more. UConn hockey noted that Freitas and the lack of scholarships were sufficient. The program wasn't even asking for any more money from the school or AD.

Hockey East was never going to add UConn in its current form until they invested in facilities and scholarships, which they fortunately did.

Think maybe he regrets calling Houston “butt ugly” now? (To be fair, i was there, Houston IS butt ugly)

Not a good look when you are trying NOT to come off as a New England snob.
