Other than that he won a championship here and Danny hasn’t won a tourney game yet? Other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how did you enjoy the play?

I am all in on Hurley and we needed to get rid of KO but please. We’re not Syracuse. We don’t print tee shirts because we’re mid-season #1 in someone’s rankings. UConn will be back when we start winning conference championships and tourney games. And by the way — I have little doubt Danny Hurley would fully agree with this. We’re doing great and our trajectory is great. But we’ve accomplished nothing yet.
Leave it to the lawyer to tell you exactly how happy you’re allowed to be. Been in siberia for years, looking like a #1 out of nowhere. Some people here gonna get excited, try your best to enjoy it :).

I’ll buy a shirt and give the first $20 donation to the guy who’s gonna wrap his car and post the picture. Make it happen.

Torvik still has us 3 for pre-season included and 2 for only this season.

Miya still has us at 5, but don't think the games from yesterday are in yet (site says updated in the morning but doesn't list LIU in our recent games).

Here's a table of the last 10 teams to be KenPom #1 at this point in the season and some notes on how their season ended.
YearTeamAdjEMSeedResultEnd RankNotes
2021-2022Gonzaga29.231Sweet 161Chet foul trouble and guards failed.
2020-2021*Gonzaga31.171Runner Up1Undefeated and then killed by Baylor in title game
2019-2020Ohio St29.315*N/A8COVID no tournament, 5 seed estimated by bracket matrix.
2018-2019Duke30.611Elite 84Zion team, lost by 1. Had 2 FTs down 2 with 5 sec left
2017-2018Villanova29.351Champion1Best team to win title in last 10 years
2016-2017Duke30.292Round of 3214Struggled ACC play but won ACC tournament, lost to South Carolina who did end up making Final 4
2015-2016Virginia0.94381Elite 84Lost to Syracuse. Good not great team
2014-2015Kentucky0.97281Final 41Probably best team in last 10 years.
2013-2014Louisville0.95564Sweet 161Lost to Kentucky who lost to us in title game
2012-2013Indiana0.97251Sweet 163Lost to Syracuse. Didn't make any shots against the zone (career 44% guy went 0/5).
2022-2023UConn29.51???
* used later date in season since season started later.

So 7 of the 10 got a 1-seed in the tournament. 5 of the 10 finished the season as the #1 ranked KenPom team. But only 1 won the title, and 2 others made the Final 4 out of the 9 tournaments. 2 others made Elite 8, but 3 made only the Sweet 16. 1 didn't even get that far (but the team had been tailing off obviously as the season went on).

We're firmly in the middle of the pack as far as team quality at the moment, which is a good sign (although Adh EM isn't necessarily designed to compare across years so much as within one year)..

Me: Dan, are you telling me we still have room to improve?

Ball pressure on the top is causing us some pain. When it happens we cannot set our offense. I think the staff should be able to scheme against this and limit the damage. More AJ up top, faster decisions by Newton, and AK/DC/+ in the circle should make teams pay. Damn, height helps, we’ve not had that in a few years.

i agree, feel like we have a good amount of room for improvement which is scary to think about.

Yep. Less room than a lot of teams, and I say that because it seems like 90% of college teams play way too much pick and roll / hero ball crap. However, there are definitely things that can be cleaned up.

Rankings, schmankings.

Forget the external affirmation, relax and enjoy the team proving so many wrong, and focus on the big picture that this may be another special year for UConn.

Pay attention to:
-how far these players (and staff) have come in a few years;
-having the right players with the right mindset;
-the development of the players;
-how they've bought into the system;
-how unselfishly they're playing;
-how gratifying it was to see Alleyne break out of his slump;
-how Karaban rebounded from a two game slump;
-how there's so many good players the team has been able to shrug off a bad night by a few players and keep winning;
-how Clingan's goal may be more rings than Olander!

Someone send this to Hurley to let the players know that being #1 in mid-December doesn't guaranty anything. Although he seems to be driving home that message already. And it seems the players are listening, which is a good sign.

Top 6 in both offensive and defensive efficiency is absurd.

I think the benchmark for national champions is being top 20 in both offense and defense.
That’s pretty much the metric. Most national champions are top 5 in one and top 15-20 in the other. Baylor was 22nd defensively in ‘21 but were 2nd in offense.

The only other team in the last 15 to fall outside of the range? 2014 UConn who were 39th in offense and 10th in defense.

I said this a few weeks back. We know how we are and what we can do. Let’s see how far we get in March m, that’s where UConn will prove itself. Pressure is on. I think UConn will advance deep into the tournament. Will we be satisfied with only an Elite 8 run, Final Four bid…. We’ll have to wait for a Boneyard Poll on that.

You ever watch Ford vs. Ferrari? There's a scene where Ken Miles is talking to his son about running the Le Mans loop, each turn each S curve, speed, line, where to accelerate, where to brake, shooting for the perfect lap. There's always room to improve. And if you ever think there isn't, that's when you might get unexpectedly and painfully surprised.

By the way, this attitude by some of us annoys others in the chat. I'm still going to call out sloppy play, missed assignments or circus passes for what they are.

If that floats your boat go right ahead. Basketball is a game with many possessions and mistakes are made. And when those mistakes are made, I'm sure this team knows about it before you post it..
