As the talent becomes more even we will see how the big games turn out. KLS could defend no one in the 4th Q and it hurt us. You need a bench at the end of the year. We played tight and were out hustled often last night. These players feel the pressure and there is no help.
You probably aren’t aware of this, but KLS blew out her ankle and will require surgery in the off-season. That may be part of the reason why she didn’t have lateral quickness.

FWIW, Gabby Williams has an ongoing hip injury and Crystal Dangerfield has shinsplints severe enough to have kept her from practicing for the last month and a half.

Newer to the boneyard but one thing we need to watch is Geno's coaching style over the past two years. He doenst play freshman......and it hurts us. Walker is a beast and if she was getting minutes all year to the tune of 15-20 we would have beat ND. Stevens is soft and getting Walker in there and her style and energy would have made all the difference in the world. Freshman scare him as they should but the other teams are getting their young players reps and at the end of the year it pays off like it did last night for ND. Walker and the two stud Freshman better get PT next year or there really is a problem. Next years team is not as good as this one........so......as great as Geno is.............he is slipping and getting out coached and some of that out coaching started in the pre-season.

Explains a lot, Geno used no excuses.

It’s clear the women’s problems are 100% mental.

They played awful against another clearly inferior opponent last year with the bright lights.

They have light years more talent than both.

Is it fair to question Geno's situational coaching and team's poise in an actual close game when it matters?

He's the greatest women's coach of all time, and is great at building a monster and throttling inferior teams. But how about when it's a 3 point game with 5 minutes left against a team that can somewhat keep up with them? He has continuously been outcoached by Muffet in close, big games.

I think it's also fair to say that UConn doesn't get much experience in grind-it-out games where ND has more experience with close games.

I'm also taking the abysmal refereeing out of this for now.

Nah, Geno’s no different than any other great coach.. you’ve got a great player you can turn to, you do well in close game situations. I mean, Taurasi’s record in close games...Muffet just knows how to coach against him. And that’s good. IMO, women’s basketball needs a new rivalry. Tennessee vs Uconn was an event in sports. ND is most likely to take its place.

Interesting, there was an article about Geno from earlier this week. He said this year felt like last year.

He said this team wasn’t on a mission.

At first I thought it was just geno being geno. But after watch such a lazy, distracted effort, maybe he wasn’t just creating something.

Lord knows Geno bears no responsibility. The players just didn’t want it badly enough. What’s he supposed to do?

UConn ladies 0-7 in OT games in the tourney? 4 to ND? Ouch.

For all their blowouts night after night, year after year, they can always find a gut-wrenching season-ending loss when they go up against the handful of other competitive teams in women's hoops.

Frickin Notre Dame and their football TV contract crapola. Go Miss St.
ALWAYS ? 11 national championships and the way you see they "always find a gut-wrenching season-ending loss" ? Yeah, whatever.

Yes. What doesn't get exposed in 3 months playing against Cincinnati and East Carolina gets exposed in front of 20,000 people facing a real team in a tight game.
Not really. The one thing I would say is that the whole "great passing team, gives up the good shot to pass to an open teammate for a GREAT shot" doesn't work so good against a really good defense. Sometimes you've got to take the "good" shot, because there may not BE a "great" shot. You can't really demonstrate that in 40 pt blowouts.

Not an excuse, an explanation, particularly as it relates to KLS and ability to stay in front of the opposing player.

Did you see how loose they were against South Carolina?

This is the 2nd straight FF that nurse and dangerfield were abysmal.

They got scared, again, by the bright lights. No excuse for the defense being that terrible

Then she should not have been out there
Goes back to Geno not using 5* players on his bench all year
Hopefully (and I mean it in a women's basketball balance way, not an anti Geno)) some of these future 5* will see this and go where they will play
I really didn't understand how he coached this year but his record speaks for itself

Which is why you sorta dont give up on Megan Walker in the middle of the year no? Girl was 6'1 and had length and athleticism. She was on the floor in December when UConn rallied down 10 against ND. SHe had 18 pts at UCLA who made the Elite 8. You don't ever give up on a player like that and shorten your bench to 6 by design. He seemed unwillingly to ever part with a starter even when match ups were bad for the short front court or with some of the guards not playing well. Azura didn't get 30+ mins against ND the other night.

I was aware of the injuries that's why it was nice to see Dangerfield get her game back against S Carolina. With the rest before the Tourney Williams had not been showing like she was in as much pain as earlier in the season. Once KLS got the 3rd and 4th foul she looked lost. The inbounds to 4 Notre Dame players case in point. Giving her a break and running a quicker player for a time would have been smart. Geno seized up.

All the more reason to develop the bench during the season.
