UConn hosts the St. Johns Redmen tonight at 7:00 pm at the XL Center in their penultimate game of the regular season, but that takes a back seat the best and most anticipated news of the season. The return of Paige Bueckers. Bueckers, the national player of the year as a freshman, was injured on Dec. 5 in the final minutes of a victory over Notre Dame. Diagnosed with an anterior tibial plateau fracture and lateral meniscus tear, she underwent surgery on Dec. 13. Bueckers emerged from her Friday afternoon appointment with Dr. Robert Arciero, chief of the sports medicine division in the department of orthopedic surgery at UConn Health grinning from ear to ear with the news she was hoping to receive.

She's was cleared to play. She's expected to play tonight. How many minutes she plays will no doubt be minimal as Geno and Chris Dailey will attempt to ease her back into the lineup tonight and Sunday against Providence. Expect the arena to erupt like never before when she runs out on the court with her teammates this evening because the crowd knows at some point she'll enter the game. The wait is over. Paige Bueckers is back. It's gameday, so let's go.

It seems surreal, but just seven days from today, the Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament (March 4-7) will tip off at the Mohegan Sun Arena. Before we can even begin to talk about the Big East Tournament, UConn has to close out their regular season schedule with St. John’s tonight and Providence on Sunday. UConn beat both of these teams on the road earlier this year. The Johnnies shouldn’t pose too much of a challenge for the Huskies, ranking as the 128th best team in NET and sitting in seventh place in the conference (7-10). Massey's Rating Service has UConn winning this game 80-68. If the Red Storm want to pull off the upset, they’ll need their leading scorer 6'0" junior guard Leilani Correa to show out and really torch the Huskies’ stingy defense. These games will be useful to help the Huskies get more minutes together to gel.

UConn won the 2021-22 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship with the victory over Marquette Wednesday night. UConn will be the No. 1-seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. UConn has won 28 total conference regular season championships, including the last nine straight. UConn is 45-17 all-time vs. St. John's. On Jan. 23, Caroline Ducharme scored 28 points to lead UConn past St. John's in Queens, 75-57. Olivia Nelson-Ododa had 18 rebounds and 10 assists.

St. John's is coming off a 68-62 overtime win vs. Providence last Sunday. Camreé Clegg scored 23 points in the game while Leilani Correa had 20. This season, Correa is averaging 17.8 points per game to lead the Red Storm. Coming into tonight's game, Leilani Correa is boasting a team-high 17.8 points per game to place fourth in the BIG EAST. Correa has finished in double figures in 20 games this season, eclipsing the 20-point plateau on 10 different occasions. St. John’s Women’s Basketball Head Coach Joe Tartamella took over sole possession of first place on the program’s all-time wins with an 83-63 triumph over Xavier. Rayven Peeples leads the way for St. John’s in rebounding, pulling down 9.6 boards per contest. She logged a career-best 17 rebounds against Providence (Feb. 20) this season. This season, the Johnnies average 73.8 points, ranking third in the conference and 31st nationally. The Red Storm sits third in the conference and 17th nationally with 22.8 3-pointers made this year. As a team, St. John’s averages 8.4 triples per game. The Red Storm scoring defense (72.9) has improved slightly since they played UConn. They are turning opponents over 14.3 times per game but are allowing 43.6 percent shooting from the floor.

I wonder how many more "walk up" tickets will be sold tonight because of Paige's return? That's going to be a fun place to be tonight. There's nothing like being there. It's just not the same watching it on TV. You can't feel the electricity and the vibe that will be permeating throughout the arena. To all of you "lucky" fans going to the game, enjoy. :)

I don't know Friday night is kind of a crappy day to try to do sports in general, never mind a college sport where you rely on students to make up much of the crowd. Another reason the Big East schedule sucks with all of these Friday night games. And then you're asking students to drag themselves out to Hartford on a Friday night? Plus the weather isn't the best which may deter some from coming out. I hope the place is packed for Paige's return, but how many XL games have been packed for Big East opponents? Probably could have waited until Sunday so she could make her return in what will certainly be a packed Gampel and on national TV.

To my knowledge Paige has never not started any game she was available to play. It might be a surprise but I would not be surprised if she starts tonight. How long she plays will depend on how that start goes. I'm guessing the starters will be Paige, Nika, CW, Liv, and AE. Just like it was before. Tons of subbing of course where it is difficult to tell the players who are in or on the bench. Could be a lot of fun tonight. I hope Paige's shot is clicking tonight - she has worked hard to get the chance to display it. (2 3s, 2 2s, 2 FTM, 10 assists - yes I can dream).

Is the proper terminology for the 'thing' on her leg a "compression sleeve"?

Regardless...it looks far more comfortable than a brace.
