Interesting article on the new research park at UConn. Clearly aiming for AAU & B1G attention.
Framing UConn’s Future: Tech Park - UConn Today

Q: Are public-private research partnerships more important today in terms of securing funding than they have been in the past?

A: I think that collaboration is going to become the model of the future for scientists. The national research budget has not been growing for the past 10 years. So people are looking for strategic partnerships to be successful. The research centers that are moving to the Tech Park highlight our strengths. These are strategic areas for UConn and they are strategic areas for Connecticut industry. To be successful in obtaining large grants, we need to show we have the critical mass to lead. That is why it is important for us to identify potential partners like Harvard, the University of Maryland, or Rutgers University now, and to start working with them in order to present that we have working collaborations in place. This is where we are going to be strategic.

Statements such as this either foretell something ... or they don't. I choose to believe they do. There are four large public institutions in the Northeast: Penn State; Rutgers; Maryland; and UConn. The athletic departments of three are housed in the B1G. The Northeast is too massive to be adequately served by just those three. New England is left out entirely. Something will be done. We need to maintain focus. This is all part of a plan.

No. UMass is slightly larger than Uconn (Amherst v. Storrs) and SAT scores (I know, they are meaningless) are slightly higher.

I'm actually surprised at how much closer it is when I applied to both schools for 2010. UMass was much lower than they are listed here. I also find it odd that admission % has gone up at UConn since I applied - I wonder if they're including branches - notice how it says University of Connecticut and UMass Amherset - no specification for Storrs.

I think both schools are trending up.

One of the comments on UMass caught my eye:

A beautiful campus but not a very academic university, very party/sport focused. The opportunities for underclass men are very limited compared to other universities, which is discouraging. Not a bad economic choice, Amherst in general is a cute town and the new honors college dorms are nice. If you choose to go here please be conscious of where you plan to live, the stereotypes of the residential areas are based in fact!

And this, from the Globe in 2010:

Despite improvement efforts that date back generations, UMass Amherst remains firmly lodged among the nation’s second-tier state schools, depleted by years of budget cuts. The average SAT scores of incoming students, freshman retention rates, and graduation rates lag behind those of its peers. The number of tenured faculty has plummeted. And the school’s endowment is one of the lowest in the country for a public flagship school.

SAT scores from Complete Guide: UConn SAT Scores and GPA

UMass Average SAT: 1208 (New method: 1270)

UConn Average SAT: 1840 (New: 1310)

So you were proven to be wrong on your SAT comment and now are reacting in an even more jerk like manner.

And what fine institution did you go to?

Ha Ha. If any existed.

Why, 25% are above 1990.

UConn SAT Score Analysis (Old 2400 SAT)
The 25th percentile SAT score is 1690, and the 75th percentile SAT score is 1990.

As for UMass:

These schools are more selective and have higher scores than UMass. If you improve your SAT score, you'll be competitive for these schools.

That Michigan education must have been worth every penny seeing you apparently have nothing better to do than troll internet fan message boards on a Sunday night.

Live here, unfortunately. But yeah, it enabled me to not have to send my kids to UCon.

Who cares about UMass? Have no idea why it is even being discussed.
