Poulin the save, UConn the 4-2 win!!! UConn takes another series, this time against a tough ECU team. UConn can't finish lower than 3rd in the AAC, which means they will play next on Wednesday in the AAC tourney.
Great series win! Not gonna lie, a little apprehensive about probably facing the Cincy ace again, but we've got a much stronger team on paper and just have to take care of business.
Chris Jones was speculating earlier that Colby Dunlop might pitch the first game, pushing Feole back to give him rest. With UConn now playing on Wednesday, it will be interesting to see if this plan holds, or if Feole gets the start. There is a huge incentive to win the first two games of the AAC tournament, as then you avoid having to play a Friday game.
The other thought is that if Colby Dunlop pitches the first game, that pushes Kersten and Gardner back to the third and fourth games. Kersten has had two tough starts in a row, and Gardner hasn't gone longer than five innings in quite some time. That plays into the thinking as well.
If Feole starts weds and we're lucky enough to jump out early, would we consider taking him out after 4 or some pitch count and have him potentially pitch on Saturday?
Wow what a great series. 2 of 3 from a top 10 team. Extra rest day Saturday. Minimum 3 seed and Tuesday rest day. And most important, Cate returned to the mound with a solid performance. I'm pumped for next week!
So the real reason for the doubleheader today was so the team could watch all the royal wedding coverage tomorrow. And he said it with a real straight face.
