Better than 2004??

Sanogo
Karaban
Jackson
Clingan.

This was the foundation of the team.

No offense to this year’s team but I think 2004 beats any other team in UConn history

Yeah, even in the modern game that 2004 team had Charlie V at the stretch four.

Okafor
Charlie V
Boone
Armstrong
Tooles

If you are including Jackson than you have to include Denham and/or Anderson.

Even 2009 has a case:
Thabeet
Adrien
Edwards
Sticks

There’s really no comparison - what is a Front Court now? Only sanogo and clingan play near the hoop

Game has changed a lot since the early 2000s, but Jackson and Karaban are highly useful swiss army knives. They are atypical front court players.

This was our best center duo of all-time.
Yeah, I think this is the argument to be made. Having the two of them effectively removed any foul trouble or fatigue from the equation, while also presenting wildly different skillsets for opponents to have to adjust to.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot …. which is really saying something because 04 was ridiculous with Okafor, Boone, Villanueva, Armstrong …. all of these guys played at least 5 years in the NBA.

With that said, Sanogo, Clingan, Karaban and Jackson is significantly more versatile with all of these guys being very different types of players. None of the 04 guys were reliable ball handlers, or were 3 level scorers like karaban (villanueva was close but i don’t recall him being able to beat people off the dribble) or were elite perimeter defenders like Jackson is.

Candidly, if given the choice of the 04 front line or 23, i really don’t know which one I would take.

The game is so different than it was then. The best way to compare is not 5/4 vs 5/4, it would be "close to the basket" players vs. "perimeter" players.

Sanogo/Clingan vs. Emeka/Boone/Hilton

Karaban/(maybe)Jackson vs. CV

Its close. That team was dominant in it's era, this team was too, but maybe slightly less so during the regular season...but then again, maybe moreso during the tourney.

People forget how stacked 2004 was. Okafor, Boone, Villanueva and Armstrong. All played in the NBA.

But, a lot of guys on this year's team will play in the NBA (including all of Sanogo, Clingan, Karaban, and Jackson).

So that doesn't help us choose between 2004 and 2023. Both great frontcourts.

All those guys on 2004 were 6'10" or above. Teams don't have size like that today.

They don’t beat 1999 UConn

I asked Jim Calhoun that question at a luncheon once. Who wins 1999 vs. 2004. He said in 1 game, 99 wins. In a 7 game series, 04 wins.

Okafor, Armstrong, Boone and Villanueva! You can't possibly go with them if you're serious
