I know some might be disappointed they didn't get their responses included but I only have "room" for 1000 results so I cut the women's board off at 500. Five hundred responses in three days! Wowza, you guys rock!

So, here's what we got. BTW, these responses are similar to the census I did at least a decade ago.

1. I am a fan of:

UConn men only, 1, .2%
UConn women only, 233, 46.8%
UConn football only, 0
Both UConn bball teams, 130, 26.1%
Anyone with UConn on their jersey, 100, 20.1%
Another school, 31, 6.2%
None, 3, .6%

2. If you're a fan of another team, which one is it? (note: I phrased this question badly. I should have asked "If you responded to "Another school" above, which school?" So, I eliminated all responses from anyone that identified themself as a UConn fan. Sorry for the confusion)

Baylor, 3, 10.0%
Duke, 2, 6.5%
Louisville, 2, 6.5%
Maine, 1, 3.2%
Notre Dame, 8, 25.8%
Rutgers, 3, 10.0%
South Carolina, 2, 6.5% I know there are more of you out there!
Stanford, 1, 3.2%
Tennessee, 4, 12.9%
Texas, 2, 6,5%
No response, 3, 10.0%

Interestingly, fans of all teams but Tennessee and ND used names like Rutgers or RU, Louisville or UofL, Texas, etc. Only one ND fan said "Irish" fan. However, of the four Tennessee fans responding, three identified themselves as Lady Vols fans rather than Tennessee or UT-K. IMO, that shows what a disaster of an idea it was for the university to try to eradicate the Lady Vols designation as the fans identify strongly with it.

3. For those responding "not a fan of any team", check if you're:

A member of the media
Just a sports fan
I heard about the Boneyard and wanted to check it out

So, 3 people in question 1 said they're not a fan of any school but 27 responded to this question :) Again, my bad for the poor phrasing. Let's move along.

4. Did you attend UConn?

Yes as an undergraduate, 74, 14.8%
No as undergrad, yes as graduate student, 22, 4.4%
No, did not attend UConn, 403, 80.8%

5. If you are a UConn fan, are you either a Connecticut native or currently living here?

Yes, 305, 63.2%
No, 178, 36.8%

6. Are you male or female?

Male, 399, 80%
Female, 100, 20%

7. What is your age range?

Under 16, 0
16-22, 3, .6%
23-29, 15, 3.0%
30-39, 19, 3.8%
40-49, 52, 10.2%
50-59, 103, 20.6%
60-69, 182, 36.4%
70-79, 105, 21.0%
80-89, 19, 3.8%
90+, 2, .4%

There you have it, ladies and gentlemen!

Now I'm going to poll the men's board......

Anybody has a theory why UConn WBB fan base's demographic is somewhat older ? I am willing to bet that the men's team fan base's demographic is much younger.

The 50-69 age ranges coincide nicely with teen daughters in the 1991 on era when UCONN WBB caught fire. That's almost 60% of the poll respondents. Maybe ????

One question should have been how many of your children or siblings played WCBB.

I think the older average age may also stem from the fact that CPTV is the one that started broadcasting the games in the 90's, and public television viewers tend to be a bit on the mature side:rolleyes:

I guess I am surprised that the primary respondent description would be a man in his 50s or 60s. Which also happens to describe me. My daughter went to UConn, but that question did not come up on the poll.

I think you have a large number of males 50 and older because the women now play the game the way we were taught to play it. Consequently we identify with the women's game of today and find it much more watchable than we do the men's game of today.

In my opinion, running over people to dunk the ball or shooting the ball from behind the arc is not "basketball" as I learned it. And yes, that makes me a dinosaur as my son says. So be it.;)

Last time I checked the women also shoot the ball from behind the arc... You must really not like KLS's game.

Ah, but she usually gets her shot off based on ball movement and motion offense, not pulling up for a three off of transition without looking to see if there is a better option. ;)

I'm surprised that the women's board skews so heavily male. I would have expected closer to 50/50.

The age results aren't surprising, but there's actually another factor at play. This poll doesn't answer "what is the age distribution UConn women's fans", but it's also convolved with the age distribution of people who are computer literate/inclined, and active enough to post on the message board. I would think that second factor actually biases this poll younger, and that the distribution of UConn women's fans is actually even older than implied by this poll.

Good stuff! I am surprised that 78% are 50-79 and 63% of the blog are male.
80% male. Unless you read 63% male, 20% female, 17% other. Which is also acceptable to me.

I'm putting all of the results, men's & women's boards, on an Excel spreadsheet so we can get a total for the two boards. For those without access to Excel, I'll put it up on the blog.

Lulz. Great straw man.

Also, pull up 3s in transition don't happen much in the men's game. Not sure where you got that notion from. Instead men usually just "run over people to dunk the ball" in transition. It's highly entertaining.

Now I'm going to poll the men's board.

I think I had guessed that the median age was 64.
If those in the 60-69 group are evenly distributed, then the median age would be .... 63!

Tenspro2002,said : "I'm surprised that the women's board skews so heavily male. I would have expected closer to 50/50"

that's disappointing. .. a woman's sport that doesn't interest women.

pathetic. no wonder the wnba isn't drawing as much as you'd like (alth0ugh at sun games it's obvious the majority of fans are woman / girls, so that's good)

That's easy. They had daughters who played basketball and realized that women's basketball is much closer to the game they either played or watched in the 60s and 70s.

Ladies and gentlemen? Since a majority of responders are AARP-eligible or collecting Social Security checks, perhaps "geezers" would be more accurate.
I resemble that remark!!!

Brilliant answer. I know that was the case for me, and has also been for a number of fans I've talked to over the years.
