If Big 12 expands, which schools are the best options?

Football Ranking: 91st
Stadium Size: 40,642
Basketball Ranking: 25th
TV Market: 30th (Hartford)
Distance from Campus to Big 12 HQ: 1,708 miles

Selling Points: Highest academic ranking of the seven schools listed here. If the Big 12 wants a toehold in the greater New York area – something the Big Ten and ACC both have sought – UConn presents the best available option. Basketball power, in both men’s and (especially) women’s hoops. Made a play for ACC membership, so they know the realignment readiness drill. Football coach Bob Diaco appears to have that program up off the deck after disastrous Paul Pasqualoni tenure. Residing in ESPN’s backyard is not a bad thing.

Problems: Might as well be on the moon. Provides no fit, further exacerbates the league’s travel issues, doesn’t open up enticing recruiting turf, and any inference of a New York impact is a stretch. Good luck convincing Texas that it should embrace playing a November football game in the northeast. Is the league markedly improved with UConn, or just bigger?<<

RE: Texas playing in CT in November, it will never happen. In the old days of the Big East Miami never played north of Virginia in November. It wasn't a coincidence then and it sure won't be a coincidence in the future if we find ourselves in a conference with Texas.

I like how every negative opinion has every Big 12 school playing football here in the snow. We sure are going to have a lot of home games in December. In a 14 team league with east and west divisions we would likely see Texas play here once every 5 years or so.

I always seem to forget what an absolute dumpster fire Memphis is academically even compared to the other garbage cans in contention.

If it's 4 it should be UConn, Cincinnati, BYU, and Colorado State. Directional Florida are 4th and 5th in their state and are near no one else in the league. TX schools don't need Houston. And My God...Memphis is really not in the top 200?

He is right. It won't happen because they will be playing Texas at Met Life in late Sept. While we are at it, let's throw in a joint satellite camp at Don Bosco Prep in July. For anyone who thinks not having a NYC presence matters, watch how quickly after adding UConn they announce the Big12 basketball tournament i being held at MSG or Barclays. A semifinal Sat of UConn, Kansas, WvU, and Texas will be nothing like that conference has ever experienced.

New York presence is determined by eyeballs, and UConn does better than anyone when it comes to NYC and eyeballs. I'd say UConn is on par with Syracuse in that regard, but the ratings for UConn women's BB in NYC are pretty high. That gives UConn the edge.

Well that's a pretty stupid way of looking at it. A single year? It's unfair to UCF as well.

I could see Texas wanting to play at Metlife, but I highly doubt it would be a requirement for conference membership. No reason to give up a home game against one of the two marquee opponents in conference when attendance has been an issue over the last few years. Texas is the type of game that excites fans and sells season tickets. Let Texas schedule a "home" game at Metlife like ND did in Fenway against BC or Indiana did at Fed Ex against PSU a few years back.

As for your Satellite Camp in NJ, The Horns don't need it. They could recruit 25 4-5 Star Players without leaving the state under the right coach(Hint not Charlie Strong). This is not a bad idea to work on with schools like ISU, WVU, and The Kansas Twins who lack natural recruiting grounds. I'm sure some other local programs FBS and FCS alike would jump on board as well. While I don't see a chance in hell that they move the Conference Bball Tournament, I could see something preseason played there with good success.

You're right I misremembered the stat.

But my point is relevant. In the 13 seasons Miami was in the Big Eastbthey only played a non-dome game in the North 3 times after the second weekend in November.

Funny how when it got cold the Canes final conference away games always seemed to end up in the Carrier Dome.
