3rd period

Blue:
Newtown
Hawk
alleyne
Samson
Sanogo

White:
Diarra
Joey C
Apostolos
Karaban
Clingan
Just an FYI that his name is Newton, like the suburb just west of Boston, and not Newtown, the town along I-84 between Waterbury and Danbury. Just trying to cut that off before the season starts. :)

Just got back and some random thoughts & observations:

-Hawk delivered on the hype
-Sanogo was a little sloppy on D, but O has clearly advanced
-Clingan much farther along in his development than I thought he would be
-The building panic about Newton was unfounded. Thought he played well on D and O
-Alleyne showed some good stuff, will be a great 6th man at worst
-Samson looks like a completely different player than last year. Good lord is he long and athletic. Much more aggressive
-Karaban was a bit more quiet on offense than what I was expecting. He may still be nursing a bum ankle so I will cut him some slack.
-Joey C & Romoglou looked much better than I expected
-Diarra is a junkyard dog!

Some observations courtside-

Hawkins is a stud. He will go off for 30-40 sometimes, but I can see him being streaky. He seems a little over reliant on 3s off the screen still, but he’s got scoring ability all over the floor. The kid can truly shoot the 3 like a pro.

Clingan was giving Sanogo fits at times, particularly in the first half of the scrimmage. Sanogo settled in later. They seemed quite competitive with each other. Clingan is impressive- he’s very mobile for his size, was a huge presence in the paint on defense at times. He didn’t make as many dumb freshman big man fouls as I was expecting. He will contribute immediately this season I’d imagine.

Our point guard play without Jackson is my main concern. I know Newton got some points but we seem to be lacking something in the backcourt. I think this will be our achilles heel. Hopefully Jackson can save the day, or Newton will settle in a bit more and gain some more toughness. I like Joey but not sure he’s going to be talented enough to have heavy minutes against guards in the BE. Hassan has a great motor and is quite active defensively, but doesn’t seem to have a super reliable shot (even though he likes to heave at times). Maybe we are just spoiled by the PG play in the past for this program.

Samson made some real nice plays, had active hands on defense. He had a great steal and slam at one point. He still made some freshman level errors though.

Richie barely played.

The Greek kid is solid, he’ll be a contributor here sometime in the future I’d imagine.

Alleyne has a nice stroke.

Karaban didn’t really show out, might need more time with injury and all.

Main takeaways from attending tonight's scrimmage game.
1. Players showed very good intensity on both ends of the court.
2. We got several good shooters.
3. New point guards can play.
4. Depth is best it's been in quite awhile.
5. Clingan can play at this level.
6. Jackson is healing well.

Hot takes from tonight:

* I like Diarra to be starting PG Monday night
* Karaban overhyped/still recovering
* Clingans size can overwhelm. Give him a year or 2 and watch out.
* Hawkins can flat out score
* Could make more free throws
* Jackson’s finger can’t be that bad. He was using both hands to slap five on the sideline tonight
* Danny didn’t get T’ed up
* They were selling beer tonight

Add:
* plastic straws too small for the large cups. I was forced to use a paper straw!

* No roster sheet with players photos and numbers.

* Plenty of season ticket pricing sheets available.

* South garage went to a gateless, ticketless all mobile payment system. I couldn't make it work sand didn't pay...
