Adamec: Nurse sees big picture of Uconn tradition

There was a Canada red, USA white, and a long blue line of UConn greatness that Nurse, a freshman, hopes to become part of.


“It was insane,” Nurse said with a laugh. “It was crazy to be around all those greats and to think that they went to the same school that I’m going to. That I’m going to be able to work with the coaches that they played for is really exciting.”

Nurse came in midway through the first quarter and her first challenge was guarding USA veteran Lindsay Whalen. During a second-half stretch she defended against ex-Notre Dame standout Skylar Diggins and gave the former UConn nemesis a smack as Diggins cut through the lane.

And somewhere there were Huskies’ supporters wondering where more of that was from Nurse’s predecessors in the 2010-2013 time frame.

Well yes, some wondered why that never happened.

“Lindsay was saying on the sidelines how Kia was up in her grill,” Dolson said.

“She’s so intense,” Stewart added. “She’s a strong, tall guard that can disrupt people on defense. When she needs to create for herself on offense she can do it.”

Some of us got it about this young athlete a while ago. Glad more are seeing her steely determination to be a great Husky. We have an absolutely fab 4 fresh coming in and it is going to be some kind of great ride for us fans to watch them find the UConn way.
