Dec 19 Tennessee Home 53 - 50 (OSU only committed 9 turnovers but Diamond stole the show)

Dec 28 Notre Dame Away 62 - 61 (Turner played 33 minutes)

Jan 04 UCLA Away 71 - 51 (Jordin Canada & pressure defense causing turnovers did them in)

Feb 26 Stanford Away 76 - 54 (Stanford shot lights out 57.7%)

.....a very smart team that plays solid defense.....susceptible to pressure defense.....can get into foul trouble particularly when the game is tightly officiated....seem to struggle when guards are pushed away from comfort zone....bigs neutralized offensively when guards are overplayed making entry passes more challenging.....adept at playing angles and passing lanes....will use up shot clock as long as they are ahead or the game is close but playing from behind is another story.....well-coached and tight knit team that will play hard to whistles and final horn....3-point shooters have short memory and no conscience....without a doubt the 2nd best team in Final Four.....UConn by 18..........

Accurate analysis.....its comforting this is their first exposure to UCONN. As we know, we're not a an easy nut to crack at first glance. Assuming fouls aren't an issue, believe our defense, offensive execution, and our speed are too much for them. If we can run, it may snowball. Yes, Rueck has done an outstanding job teaching them fundamentals, but, it'll be an interesting and different challenge for the Beavers.

Exactly. Although Oregon St will probably be our toughest opponent in the Final 4, their team has yet to compete against UConn. In fact, Syracuse is the most recent team to play UConn which was during Stewie's freshman year in the old Big East days.

And we know how many teams respond in playing UConn for the first time in an extended period of time (e.g. Miss St, Ohio St). That being said, this is the Final Four and nothing will come easy. Thankfully, we have a coach who has experience preparing these kids for the moment.

I watched a replay of the Oregon State - Baylor game last night. I was really surprised at a few statistics (which are approximate because I wasn't taking notes as I watched):

  • Late in the game, Baylor had about 5 turnovers and OSU had about 17 or 18. It seemed that most of the OSU turnovers were dead ball turnovers (traveling, shot clock, etc.) rather than steals, but still ...
  • The points in the paint favored Baylor by something like 40-18.
  • Two OSU starters (Sidney Wiese and Ruth Hamblin) had 4 fouls by the end of the game, and several other OSU players had 3 fouls.
So how did OSU win the game? (Usually those stats would spell doom, right?) First, they hit a lot of 3's, including contested 3's, and Baylor only hit a couple. Second, Baylor missed a lot of free throws, although the teams took about the same number of free throws.

In other words, it seemed (visually on replay as well as based on stats) that Baylor lost the game more than OSU won it.

Another factor is that OSU led for most of the game, including a 9-point halftime margin. Baylor did come back to get a 1-point lead with a few minutes left, and OSU was able to overcome that. I am not sure that OSU would have been able to overcome a 9-point deficit if they had faced that.

The question will be whether Geno's offensive tricks can overcome OSU's solid defense. If UConn gets any significant number of easy baskets (finding open players under the basket as they did repeatedly against MSU and frequently against Texas), the game might get out of hand. If UConn gets major transition points, the same thing could happen. If OSU is able to force a half-court game, it will be close and UConn may be vulnerable, since I don't think that the extraordinary 3-point shooting of the last two games is likely to continue.

The Texas MOV would have been under 10 points if UConn had hit only their average percentage of 3-point attempts, and it would have been a nailbiter if their 3-point shooting had been subpar.

Keep in mind, as well, that Wiese did not play in the Notre Dame or UCLA games due to a fracture to her non-shooting hand, which she actually suffered in the first half of the Tennessee game.

I watched the first half of the Baylor/OSU game. My impression is that if we defend the 3 consistently, we will be FINE! UCONN by 15.

I noticed one thing watching the Baylor-OSU game - Weise likes to drive to the basket a lot whether there's a lane or not - resulting in charges and wild shots.

Oregon State won the game against Baylor because Baylor could not hit their free throw (6-14, 42%, and only lost by 3).

Baylor lost the game because Oregon St. made them. Also, we are not a good 3 point perimeter defensive team. We give up way too many threes. However, we usually give them up early and then adjust. My wife thinks this team reminds her of the 2004 Minnesota team we played in the semifinal.

Nice to revisit the past or past games, but this is the FF 2016. OSU will be a different team and so is UConn. Hopefully it will be a GREAT game for both team.

I watched that game and was aware Wiese was not going to play. However, guard Gabriella Hanson stepped up in Wiese's absence vs. ND. and finished with 18 points (on 7 of 13 overall FG shooting, 3 of 6 from 3-pt. land,) and 5 rebounds in 33 minutes). She's not one of their big 3 in scoring, but she can climb above her 7.9 average if given the openings.
