UConn is ranked 164 out of more than 600. UConn would be ranked middle of the P5 pack (ND included in ACC): 32 schools better, 33 worse. Would be ranked 12th in ACC, 10th in Big Ten, 2nd in Big 12, 8th in Pac12, and 5th in SEC. Ranked 3rd in the American.

Based on average Forbes ranking, the Big Ten is the brainiest conference with an average of 126 followed by the ACC/131 (congrats on that Louisville add, it cost you 30 points), Pac12/169, the SEC/226, and the Big 12/283. The American's average rank was 341.

so this would suggest Uconn would bring down the ACC's academic prestige?
I would question the validity of any survey that has a score based on a weighted scoring that doesn't add up to 100%.

Maybe I'm missing something but if you look at their scoring methodology, they provide 75% of their methodology. Maybe the other 25% is based on the amount of the check provided by that school to Forbes?

Maybe I should have used the conference median for comparisons.

Conference Median
ACC / 117
American / 391
Big Ten / 113.5
Big12 / 279
Pac12 / 129.5
SEC / 217

Nope, get pretty much the same thing except the American looks even worse.

In terms of football...

The epicenter of college football is, of late, somewhere in the deep south...to triangulate this epicenter...seven of the last 8 BCS champions came from an arc...(plotted from my home residence).

Tallahassee...0 miles
Tuscaloosa...303 miles NW
Tuscaloosa...303 miles NW
Auburn........192 miles N
Tuscaloosa...303 miles NW
Gainesville...149 miles E
Gainesville....149 miles E

And the 8th NC came from Baton Rouge...443 miles W

Living among the SEC, we hear the pounding of their war drums in the near distance....hear them rattle their spears against their shields, and listen to their pronouncements of our eminent doom.

Glad to know that their conference does poorly on Forbes....some small comfort, I reckon.

Their listing is a crock of crap. Although Clemson & Georgia a very good schools there is no way they are better than UCONN. I'm wondering if there is a political bias. Forbes tends to be very conservative & rated UCONN lower because it's in a blue state.

US News & WR lists Clemson and UConn as pretty close together (two universities listed between them).

Of course one can argue rankings and methodology until the cow comes home.....but I do doubt that someone said..."Oh...this school is in a blue state...let's downgrade them".

Didn't hurt MIT and the like.

You're right. I just became really ticked off when I saw the list. And you're right - USNWR had Clemson, UGA & UCONN ranked very close together. Forbes and US News & World Report must evaluate the data differently or evaluate different data.

The University of Georgia is a respected university with a high level of research activity. UConn lists it as a research peer institution (http://www.oir.uconn.edu/Peer_Institutions.html) and that generally indicates you think they are ahead of you, not behind -- you are using them as a model and trying to match them.

Clemson is not as good as UConn overall, partly because it is smaller and does less research, but it's a respected undergraduate school.

You can see some metrics here: http://www.oir.uconn.edu/UConn_Peer_Groups_October_2012.pdf. In 2013 USN&WR ranked UConn and Georgia tied at #21 public university and Clemson at #25.

Thanks for providing the link. I noticed that NC State & VCU on the list as research universities. I hope UCONN doesn't consider themselves as behind those two schools.

Look again. The research peer list is here: http://www.oir.uconn.edu/Peer_Institutions.html. This select group appears as "BOT Metrics" in the other, larger list. The larger list is a large group of universities being compared to UConn to make UConn look good. It is a propaganda list, if you like.

I realize the need for and fascination with such rankings, however the data collection and statistical analyses for these lists are usually total crap. As I've said previously, the strength of the school should be based on the type of school within a specific subgroup (large public; small liberal art; private; research-based; graduate programs). UConn undergrad is a major up-and-comer based on the strength of applicants and their comparative GPA and standardized test scores. However, UConn's graduate programs as they relate to research funding lags behind the big boys. Herbst and Co. know this and are trying to push the envelope. The over-all "strength" and reputation of an institution can be measured in many ways and UConn has made significant strides on all levels. For the record, I have attended a small private AAU college, and large public graduate schools--one AAU and one not.

US News vs. Forbes

The following list gives a comparison between the two rankings. The groupings include a total of 76 institutions: 15 for the ACC (includes ND); 14 for the Big Ten; 10 for the Big 12; 12 for the Pac12; 14 for the SEC; and 11 for the American. Because the original numbers for each ranking service are of different sizes (due to the fact that Forbes ranked a much larger set of schools), I further ranked the universities in each group from 1 through 76. For example, UConn's place in the US News ranking was #57 which placed it 24th on that list, while in Forbes it was #164, good for 35th position.

The numbers below represent the schools position of the Forbes list, the position on the US News list, and the difference between the two ranks. A negative difference indicates that the school is ranked higher by US News and a positive difference means Forbes ranked them higher. Forbes ranked UConn 11 places lower than US News. The biggest differentials were Penn State ranked 21 places higher by US News and Utah ranked 27 places higher by Forbes.

Holy cow, stop.

They are basing this on ratemyprofessors.com rankings to a large degree.

This list is pathetic.

We can argue with and resent the position of UConn on this list all we want, but if you look at all of the schools on Registered's list above us, it is hard for me to come up with more than a handful with which I would have a question. As I look at this list I realize that SH really does have her hands full if she hopes to move us up against that sort of competition.

That's a pretty good proxy for SAT scores. Smarter kids rate their professors more highly. When I was teaching, the best way to get terrific student ratings was to teach an honors course.

It will be hard for UConn to move up these particular lists, but UConn has plenty of room to move upward on the research / graduate program / AAU metrics that the B1G is most interested in.

I hope you may be right, but I expect that most of the schools above us on that list are also working hard on the research/graduate program front. These lists are for consumption by prospective undergraduates and their parents. Since college sports is really an undergraduate phenomenon they may have more impact that we would like.

All universities are indeed working at improving, but UConn has the advantage that they are growing. It's much easier to improve your faculty profile when you can hire faculty.

While growth helps with the graduate/research metrics, it tends to hurt you on undergraduate metrics, since it means you will be less selective in admissions.

There's a bazillion different ways to assess colleges.

For me the biggest assessor is job placement by career field compared to other colleges and universities and pay within the career field.

Learning for the sake of learning is cute and all that. But if you want to learn for joy of learning and gaining a broad perspective, go to the library and read. It isn't worth the cost of college if you don't have a place to utilize the learning gained and a paycheck to pay for it.

Their listing is a crock of crap. Although Clemson & Georgia a very good schools there is no way they are better than UCONN. I'm wondering if there is a political bias. Forbes tends to be very conservative & rated UCONN lower because it's in a blue state.
There sure is some sort of bias.

Notre Dame as the second best school? Really??

Exactly. This is the double-edged sword. If you want to be perceived as bigger, more applicants need to be accepted and the quality of the undergrad class will likely decline in the short- to mid-term. But with bigger comes more money, more grant and research money and more sought-after grad programs.

Better ratings come from grade inflation.
