Update On Chance Comanche
|This past weekend I had the opportunity to talk to Chance’s mom Melissa. We talked about Chance’s recruitment and about what will go into his decision. Comanche’s another recruit out west that coach Ollie and his staff are recruiting hard. The 6’11” 200lbs. center that goes to View Park High School in California is receiving major interest from elite colleges all over the country. This isn’t because he’s a hyped recruit, it’s because he dominates in every game he plays in.
“He’s a 6’11” skilled big man with unbelievable touch. He can step out and hit the mid range jump shot. His upside is unlimited,” is how his AAU coach Ryan Silver described him. Over his last couple of games Chance has produced stat lines of 18 points, 15 rebounds, 7 blocks; 27 points and 23 rebounds; and 14 points, 16 rebounds, and 5 blocks.
“Arizona, California, USC, Georgetown, Kansas, Washington, Texas, and Colorado are calling the most,” in addition to UConn Chance’s mom Melissa said. Each and every school after him knows that he’s an elite player. As for any favorites at this point, his mom says there are none. “No, not really. We’re really still evaluating and I want him to assess all the schools and see which one he likes the most in terms of what they have to offer him. I’ve made it a point to take a lot of unofficial visits and we intend to take more. I just really want him to be able to assess all the schools and see which school is the best for him with the coaching and everything else,” she explained.”
As she mentioned her and her son have taken many unofficial visits. “We have visited Arizona, Arizona State, UCLA, USC, and California so far and we are going up to Kansas when we go out there for an AAU tournament. Also, possibly Colorado when we are at his AAU tournament out there. When we’re on the road that’s when we’re seeing the schools that are recruiting him. I know we are going to Houston and Atlanta for tournaments so if there are schools in those areas that are recruiting him in, like SMU, we will try and visit them,” Chance’s mom disclosed.
Chance’s mom has already accomplished what he is looking to eventually do himself. She played basketball in high school, she played in college, and she also played professionally. That’s a major advantage that he has in the recruiting process. He has someone that knows what to look for when making a college choice.
“I can’t say that there’s one factor that will outweigh the other ones. Me personally, I’m interested in the academics and coaching for him. I think coaching in terms of who the coach is, what type of relationship Chance can formulate with them, how comfortable he feels with the coaches, and the schools style of play are what’s most important. I played professional ball and college and high school so I know that at school the coaches are who he’s going to be around the most so there has to be a great bond there. I want somebody who can develop him because he would ultimately like to end up playing in the NBA. I don’t want him to just commit to a school because they were recruiting him the hardest. It has to be the right fit,” His mom said.
We also talked about UConn specifically. Here’s what she had to say about Chance’s and her relationship with the staff and about UConn in general. “It’s pretty good [their relationship with the UConn coaches]. I speak with coach Hobbs real often and I speak with Kevin Ollie periodically. Most of our communication is with coach Hobbs,” she said about the coaches. “I know it’s a good school and I know Kevin Ollie, not personally, but I’ve met him from playing in the league. I think he’s a good experienced coach and just watching him he seems good. I’ve just know UConn from over the years so I know it’s a good basketball school but I don’t know too much about the academics yet. We haven’t made a visit out there to see what they have to offer. Overall, it’s a good school that I would like to potentially look at for him.” UConn could certainly allow him to have a good shot at getting good minutes early.
With Chance Comanche having more unofficial visits lined up and likely official visits as well it’s safe to say that he’s a ways away from a commitment. UConn will likely be in the running for an official visits due to the distance from home when the time comes. UConn should be in it until the end with the talented big from California.
