|The University of Connecticut men’s ice hockey team advanced to the Atlantic Hockey semifinals for the second time in three seasons with a 4-3 win over Robert Morris at the Freitas Ice Forum, Saturday night. The win propelled the Huskies to 19-13-4 on the year, while the Colonials finish at 20-14-4.
The AHA Championship will take place at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. on Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23.
Despite outshooting RMU, 10-2, in the first period, UConn found itself down 1-0 at the first intermission. Senior Zach Hervato netted his 12th goal of the season, unassisted, midway through the frame.
Connecticut scored three consecutive goals in the second period, including the game-tying score just 1:36 into the stanza on goal by sophomore Cody Sharib (Needham, Mass.) out of a scrum in front of the net.
The Huskies took the lead at 12:27 as Sharib passed the puck from the right wing to freshman linemate Shawn Pauly (Bellingham, Wash.) for a shot from straight on and his seventh goal of the season. UConn quickly doubled its lead only 16 seconds later on an unassisted goal by freshman Joey Ferriss (Novi, Mich.). Ferriss beat the goaltender glove-side as he recorded a goal for the third straight game.
The Colonials brought the lead back down to one at the 14:48 mark on their second power play of the night. Hervato sent a pass from the right side to redshirt-junior defenseman Andrew Blazek, who ripped a slap shot into the net from a stride inside the blue line.
UConn added an insurance goal at the 3:01 mark of the third as Trevor Gerling made a move at the top of the left face-off circle and fired a shot into the back of the net.
