Tyus Battle Calls UConn a National Power House
|“The tradition, they have been a national powerhouse for the last 10 years. It’s a very good school academically and Kevin Ollie is a great up and coming young coach,” are what stands out to Tyus Battle about UConn. It’s pretty clear that he has taken notice to the basketball history in Storrs, Connecticut. He knows about the three national championships and the many conference championships to go along with them.
Battle is a very highly ranked shooting guard in the class of 2016. However, he can also play point guard at times and some schools are even recruiting him as a point guard. Currently he’s 6′ 5 1/2″ and 190lbs. and says, “I play both the 1 [point guard] and 2 [shooting guard] positions. I like to get to the basket and I’m a pretty good on ball defender.” If Battle were to play his collegiate basketball at UConn he could join the long list of UConn shooting guards in the NBA. He could join the likes of Ben Gordon, Richard Hamilton, Ray Allen, and the most recent, Jeremy Lamb.
Due to his tremendous play on the court he has garnered major interest from elite colleges. As a sophomore he already has 17 offers and is receiving interest from the likes of Kentucky, Duke, UNC, and Michigan. Battle did say that he has no early leaders in his recruitment and that he has already visited Miami, Indiana, Ohio State, and UConn.
As for his visit to UConn, which happened in March of last year, Tyus said, “It was great. They showed me around the campus and the athletic facilities.” Tyus’ father, Gary Battle, recently told Adam Zagoria that they are planning on attending a game this year but they don’t know when yet.
Tyus Battle also talked about his relationship with the staff right now. “They always try to keep in contact with us and updated on what’s going on with their program. Coach Ollie is not only a very good coach but an even better person,” he explained. Battle is yet another recruit that has raved about Kevin Ollie as a person. His father also said this to Adam Zagoria the other day, “UConn has really picked it up quite a bit. Coach [Kevin] Ollie has done a great job with him and is showing that he’s a top priority in 2016.”
Another thing we talked about was what he wants his college coach to be like. For his coach he wants, “Someone that will let me play my game and can develop me as a player.” He also mentioned that the schools coach will be a big factor for him when he decides to commit to a school. Some other things he mentioned are, “My role on the team, academics, and the college community.”
With Battle already being prioritized by Ollie and his staff UConn fans will be hearing about him a lot in the next few years. It will be a long road for him but UConn should be in it until the end.
