Marriner Rises to Top of Depth Chart at RB
|Perhaps the one thing stood out the most during media day this morning, was how highly UCONN head coach Bob Diaco views RB Josh Marriner.
The 5′ 9″ 193-pound redshirt freshman out of Chesapeake, Virginia was all but given a new nickname by the first year head man, although ‘Mighty Mouse’ did slip out from Diaco.
“Josh is pound for pound the strongest player on our team,” said head coach Bob Diaco at media day this morning. “I don’t want to give him a nickname cause he’s so much more than that, Mighty Mouse. This guy is fast, he’s strong, he’s powerful, he’s a tackle breaker with leg drive, he can push through tacklers, he can make you miss, he has some gas to otherwise extend some runs that are needed. He’s such a fantastic young guy, I can’t say enough about him. Selfless, great teammate, works hard, one of the hardest workers on the team. He’s been so fun to coach. He is the quintessential teammate.”
“We are definitely going to play with multiple backs, so Max and Josh will be stalwarts out there,” Diaco continued. “Then we have the interjection of three talented freshman that really, they all look like they will be able to participate, all five. But those two, whether one’s a starter or not one week or we blend it one week to keep them happy or whatever, they are both going to play in the games a bunch. They both do different things well and those different jobs are going to come up at different times as the situations change during the course of the four quarters, so they are both going to be used.”
