Huskies Are Overall #1 Seed; Will Play Prairie View Sunday
The No. 1 University of Connecticut women’s basketball team has been selected as the No. 1 seed in the Lincoln Regional of the 2014 NCAA Division I Women’s Championship, as announced by the NCAA on Monday.
The Huskies will play their opening round game vs. No. 16 seed and Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Tournament Champion Prairie View A&M University (14-17) at Gampel Pavilion (10,167) in Storrs, Conn., on Sunday, March 23 at 8 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN.
No. 8 seed Georgia (20-11) will square-off against No. 9 seed Saint Joseph’s (22-9) in Sunday’s other first-round game at Gampel beginning at 5:30 p.m. (EDT) on ESPN.
Sunday’s first-round winners will advance to the second-round game on Tuesday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. (EDT), also in Storrs.
The winner of Monday’s second round showdown will advance to the NCAA Regional Semifinals, which will be played at Pinnacle Bank Arena (14,970) in Lincoln, Neb. on Saturday, March 29. The Lincoln Regional Final is scheduled for Monday, March 31 at 9:30 EDT.
Each game of the 2013 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament will be televised live on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or ESPN Fullcourt.
The Huskies, who have claimed six of the last 12 NCAA titles, will be making their 26th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and sport a 91-17 (.847) mark all-time in NCAA play. The Huskies lay claim to the best winning percentage in NCAA Tournament history.
UConn earned an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament by virtue of winning the inaugural American Athletic Conference Championship on March 10. The Huskies stand at 34-0 overall and have been the top-ranked team in both the Associated Press and USA Today/Coaches Poll all season long.
Connecticut will be entering NCAA Tournament play with an unblemished record for the sixth time in school history.
UConn has advanced to the Final Four 14 times in the program’s history, including a record six-straight and 11 of the last 14 seasons overall. The Huskies have advanced to at least the Regional Semifinal in each of the past 20 seasons (1994-2013).
Connecticut is 45-4 all-time in NCAA Tournament games played in the state of Connecticut, including a 32-3 mark in Storrs.
This season marks the 17th time overall and the eighth-straight season that UConn has entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed. The Huskies boast an overall mark of 74-9 in NCAA Tournament games when playing as a No. 1 seed and have captured seven National Championships in those seasons.
