First Live Period Report
Starting on this past Wednesday, July 10th, at 5pm. coaches could officially go out and watch players as it was the start of the first of three “live” periods. Staffs can have as many as three coaches out at once at different locations watching multiple players or going all in on one player, also know as going 3-deep. At 5pm. coaches swarmed into gyms to watch tournaments.
The staff started off watching recruits as soon as they could. Their first stop was the Break Out Classic. They spent the entire Wednesday and the first part of Thursday there watching a couple of major targets and one potential target. Here’s who they watched:
• 2014- Josh Perkins (PG): Watched by UConn on Wednesday and Thursday.
• 2014- Devin Robinson (SF): Watched by UConn on Thursday.
• 2014- Wade Baldwin (SG): UConn most likely was keeping an eye on him at the Breakout Classic because he was on Devin Robinson’s team. He has no offer now but he was told by the staff they would be watching him.
As mid-day rolled around on Thursday it seems like the staff moved from the Breakout Classic and went to the Nike Peach Jam. Many elite prospect are apart of the EYBL and had advanced to the Peach Jam. A couple of top targets in 2014, 2015, and possibly 2016 were watched there. On Thursday afternoon they watched two recruits:
• 2014- Abdul Malik-Abu (PF): He was watched by UConn on Thursday.
• 2015- Charles Matthews (SG): He was watched by UConn on Thursday. He received an offer from UConn on Monday.
On Friday the staff made a quick pit stop to see a top 2014 priority in Leron Black at Peach State Showcase. Leron Black:
• 2014- Leron Black (PF): He was watched by UConn on Friday at the Peach State Showcase.
After the pit stop to watch Leron Black the staff watched a number of recruits on 2014, 2015, and 2016. After watching a couple recruits they extended them offers due to their impressive play. Here’s who they watched:
• 2014- Kelly Oubre (SF): He was watched by UConn twice on Friday and once on Saturday.
• 2016- VJ King (SF): He was watched by UConn on Friday. He later received an offer.
• 2015- Jalen Brunson (PG): He was watched by UConn on Friday.
• 2014- Terry Larrier (SF): He was watched by UConn on Friday and Saturday. He later received an offer.
• 2015- Cheick Diallo (PF): He was watched by UConn on Friday.
• 2014- Abdul Malik-Abu (PF): He was watched by UConn on Thursday and Saturday.
• 2015- Malachi Richardson (SG): He was watched by UConn on Saturday.
After watching the games on Saturday the staff made another move for the final day on the first live period. They went and watched UConn’s biggest recruiting target, 7’2″ Paschal Chuckwu. He was watched at the BasketBull Summer Championships. Paschal Chuckwu:
