Donovan Mitchell Calls UConn Prestigious
|“It’s a very prestigious school. They are very good at getting shots for their guards. Their fan base is huge and they run up and down,” is what the 6’3″ 205lbs. combo guard said about what he likes about UConn. Currently he attends Brewster Academy and he grew up in New England. That means he grew up when UConn was winning three National Championships in 12 years which definitely is a major reason why he calls UConn a prestigious school.
Mitchell has already visited UConn and was planning on coming for First Night this past year but he couldn’t make it. In addition to visiting UConn he’s made trips to, “Maryland, Providence, and Boston College.” He’s made a number of trips to possible colleges which is good. He already knows what some of them offer which allows him to have that in the back of his mind throughout his recruitment.
As of now he did say that Maryland is recruiting him the hardest but they aren’t his leader. The other main schools recruiting him are, “Providence, Boston College, West Virginia, UConn, Iowa, Creighton, and Kansas.” Being at Brewster Academy is going to allow him to get tons of exposure to other colleges this upcoming season so his list could change a lot over the next couple of months.
He also had very positive things to say about coach Ollie and his coaching staff. “He is a very good guy and I really love the coaching staff. They are smart and are great to be around,” he said. That is possibly one of the best views on the coaching staff a recruit has ever told me. It is clear that he is a major fan of Ollie and his staff. This could pay dividends when it comes to his commitment because one of the main things that will affect his decision will be his relationship with the coach along with, “If I am going to play. A large fan base and a fast paced offense.” He also wants his college coach to be able to, “Relate to players and know the players perspective. But aren’t afraid to let you hear it when you need to,” he explained.
In college he would like to play both guard spots, point guard and shooting guard. That fits very well into Kevin Ollie’s system with versatile guards running the team. As for what he does best on the court Mitchell admitted, “I like to shoot and attack the basket. Then find the open man when I need to.”
