CB Justice Pettus-Dixon, A Steal for the Huskies
|It’s been a busy week for the UCONN football program, starting with AAC media day in Newport, RI. Wednesday saw the Huskies receive a big commitment from Justice Pettus-Dixon, out of Baltimore, MD.
“I met with the coaches during camp and absolutely fell in love with the school,” Pettus-Dixon said by phone this morning. “The facilities at the school are second to none.”
The 6’ 0” 180-pound cornerback has only played the position for one year, moving from outside linebacker at the start of his junior season.
“I love to play corner,” he said. “You get to play against some big-time guys, out on an island, one-on-one. What separates me is my physicality, which helped from being a linebacker earlier in my career. I like to put my hands more on wide receivers and tight ends than other corners. I try to get them at the line, throw them off their routes.”
“It’s funny,” Justice continued, “I was so used to taking on big 280-pound plus offensive lineman to go make tackles at linebacker, that when I take down these 140-150-pound wide receivers, I just toss them left and right.”
Pettus-Dixon, who will be on campus when practice opens tomorrow, said the new coaching staff was the main reason for his decision.
“Coach Diaco, definitely. The whole program is starting fresh. Coach Reardon and Coach Lineburg were really cool and it just seemed like a great fit to me. They are building a brand new process up there. It’s an entirely new fresh start, very new facilities and I just want to be a part of that.
JPD, who runs a 4.6-40 and is rated 7th among all Maryland players in the 2015 class, chose UCONN over Oregon State (Pac-12), Cincinnati (AAC), Boston College (ACC) and NC State (ACC). He was and continues to talk with each of the other commits in the 2015 class on a regular basis.
“A lot of us will be up there tomorrow, it will be really fun. We’ve been talking a lot. We are going to have a big get together tomorrow. We talked as a group last night and we are all committed to turning this program around and being the next big thing in college football.”
We will have much more on Justice Pettus-Dixon and the rest of the 2015 class tomorrow, as they will be in attendance at the first practice of 2014.
