Bonzie Colson is Becoming a Much Bigger Target
|Colson’s a solid 6’5″ 218lbs. power forward out of Barrington, Rhode Island. Your first reaction may be that he’s undersized for the power forward position but, he constantly out performs taller players. One major thing that helps him grab rebounds over taller players is his near seven foot wingspan. According to him his best attributes on the court are, “I’m just a basketball player. I can score on the perimeter and in the post. I also am a leader on the court and a good passer,” Colson said. He has to have an amazing skill set to be able to get it done against bigger defenders at the level he does. This was evident as he was selected to participate in the Kevin Durant Skills Academy. The one thing that he’s currently working on the most, “Defense.”
I talked to him a little about UConn and something that instantly stood out to me was him saying, “It was always a school I was interested in.” Colson is another New Englander that grew up watching UConn win three national championships in a 12 year span. That has to be appealing to everyone. He also told me, “The style of play fits me.” UConn has had a couple undersized power forwards do very well. Current NBA player Jeff Adrian is one recent example.
Bonzie Colson has had UConn on his list for a little while now. He did just receive an offer from UConn on Monday but that’s not when him and coach Ollie and his staff started building a relationship. “I know the staff pretty well. I went out there for an unofficial visit to meet all the coaches and then today coach Miller saw me play at school,” he explained. Colson is quickly becoming one of the staff’s top priorities. Monday was the first day that coaches could go on the road to watch recruits and possibly conduct in-home visits. Having a coach watch you on the first day is very telling when your not already committed to that school. As for what he wants his coach to have, “I want honesty, respect, and the chance to just perform on the court,” he listed.
Then we talked about his recruitment. Currently the main schools in his recruitment are Pittsburg, Miami, Notre dame, UConn, Temple, and Florida State with no leaders. He visited Pittsburgh officially two weekends ago and has his other four set. His other four official visits are Florida State (this upcoming weekend), Notre Dame (weekend of September 28th), Miami (weekend of October 5th), and UConn (weekend of October 12th). However, location will be a factor in his commitment. Colson wants the school to be, “Not to far from home.” Another factor will be playing time.
The visit from coach Miller yesterday could be very telling of how involved UConn will be involved in his recruitment from here on out. If it goes the way I think it will he will be one of the staff’s top big men targets.
