Big East Champion Huskies Head to IC4A Championships
The University of Connecticut men’s track and field team turns its attention to the IC4A Championships this weekend after taking home the BIG EAST crown last weekend at Rutgers. The three-day event is scheduled to begin this Friday, May 10 in Princeton, N.J., and continues through Sunday afternoon. The Huskies are looking to continue their remarkable string of success in which they have won the last four major championships dating back to this year’s indoor season.
At the conference championship, Connecticut posted 119.5 points en-route to the program’s 13th BIG EAST title. With the victory, UConn grabbed the indoor and outdoor BIG EAST title in the same season for the third time in program history. The Huskies only had one first place finisher, which was Jesse Chapman, but were able to consistently gain points for the team, posting 15 top-five finishes. Among the notable performances was Chris Whyte who led the Huskies on the track, taking second place in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.21, while Selwyn Maxwell claimed third in the 110 meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in 13.93.
There were plenty of honors to go around this past week as head coach Greg Roy and his coaching staff were named the BIG EAST Outdoor Men’s Coaching Staff of the Year. It marks the fourth time that coach Roy and his staff have received the honor in the indoor and outdoor season in the same year.
The Huskies also held onto their No. 2 spot in the week USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Regional rankings, tallying 562.26 points and gaining on the Northeast’s No. 1 ranked Cornell. Rhode Island recently broke into the top-three but UConn holds a 90 points cushion over the Rams.
The Huskies finished eighth in last season’s IC4A Championships with 31 points, and will look to avenge their defeat this weekend against some fierce competition.
Connecticut will get a breather after this weekend’s event, as next on tap is NCAA East Region First Round action, scheduled to begin on May, 23.
