Bennie Boatwright Talks UConn and Recruiting
|Bennie Boatwight, a member of the class of 2015, has made a name for himself due to his elite play on the hardwood. He’s made himself a clearcut top 50 recruit in his class due to his amazing shooting ability. He knows that his shooting is one of his major strengths on the court but he also believes his, “Ball handling, and rebounding,” are among his other strengths. Even though he believes that his ball handling is good he’s says that he is working on that a lot but he’s just trying to improve all facets of his play. Boatwright added, “I just want to keep adding on to what I have built up and work on my weaknesses mainly. I’m also focusing on my motor.”
However, standing at 6’9″ and 207lbs. with the possibility of still growing a little moreĀ you would think of him as a wing or possibly being a big man who could really help stretch the floor. In fact, college coaches are recruiting him as a very versatile player telling him he could play shooting guard, small forward, or power forward when on the court. When asked about how he thinks he would fit specifically into UConn’s system he answered by saying, “I haven’t really watched the system to closely yet but the 3-4 [small forward or power forward] position wise.”
Based off that he sounds like he could fill the same role as his friend and current UConn husky DeAndre Daniels. He told this to Rivals about the effect of Daniels being at UConn, “My friend DeAndre Daniels plays there. I know about their program from him. I definitely have a positive impression of them.” Boatwright told me that he currently has a, “Good,” relationship with the staff. He also added in, “They were very friendly when I went out for an unofficial.” The unofficial visit he’s talking about occurred last October. Other things about UConn that Bennie likes are, “Just the history of the forwards they produced and the coaching staff.”
His recruitment has been very active so far. In addition to him taking an unofficial visit to UConn he has also visited California and Arizona State unofficially but those three schools are just a small fraction of his current offers. Boatwright stated that he has 22 offers as of now but out of them the most active schools after him are, “The whole Pac-12 except for Utah, Kansas UConn, Florida, and NC State.” Due to the amount of schools involved and the possibility of more getting into his recruitment he isn’t in any rush to cut his list or commit. The current plan for him is to most likely not cut his list until at least next summer. Bennie does in fact know a couple things that he will be considering when trying to decide the right college for him. They are, “Just where I feel the most comfortable and where I can grow as a player and as a person.”
