The latest player to commit to UCONN for 2015 is Ian Campbell, from Pequamnock Township in Pompton Plains, New Jersey.
The 6’ 5” 225-pound tight end enjoyed his recent trip to Storrs on June 7th.
“I really liked the campus,” Campbell said over the phone this morning. “The coaches were very nice and this is a place I could really see myself.”
Campbell’s height means another big target for UCONN quarterbacks and Tyler Davis, who committed prior to Campbell earlier this month, was the first to congratulate the newest Husky.
The soon-to-be senior is a versatile athlete, who also lines up at wide receiver for his high school squad.
“I prefer playing tight end though,” Campbell clarified. “I really enjoy blocking, but at the position you don’t know if you’re going to be blocking or running routes down field., but I can definitely stretch the field.”
Those are some welcome words for a team that lacked a tight end threat last season after the graduation of Ryan Griffin to the NFL’s Houston Texans in 2012.
Campbell was getting a lot of interest from Rutgers, Virginia, Pitt and Temple, visiting the final three before choosing UCONN.
“I went up with my parents on the 7th [of June] and we all really liked it up there,” he said. “My parents think it’s perfect for me, a nice, smaller town, which I really think will be good for me as well.”
Recruiting coordinator and defensive line coach Kevin Wolfhausen was Campbell’s main recruiter, but when he met Coach Diaco, it definitely left him with a lasting impression.
“He’s just seems like a very nice guy that is definitely willing to do anything for his players.”
Just like big, intelligent, athletic kids keep coming to Storrs, Coach Diaco continues to really hit home where it really matters, on the recruiting trail.
