Will Jackson is a UConn Husky!
|Late Monday night 6′ 4 1/2″ 175lbs. 2015 point guard Will Jackson out of Athens Christian School in Georgia committed to the University of Connecticut. The news was first reported by On The Radar Hoops. Jackson is a great talent in 2015 and fills the role of the big points guards that coach Ollie has been targeting since he’s become head coach.
Kevin Ollie watched him play in person on Friday with assistant coach Karl Hobbs, that was Ollie’s second time this season watching him. That game he 29 points, 11 assists, and 11 rebounds. Jackson joins shooting guard Prince Ali out of The Sagemont School in Florida as the first two members of Ollie’s first full recruiting class.
Last year he tore his meniscus and that held him out of AAU games and the beginning of his high school season. During that time he had time to focus more on recruiting and take visits. Jackson visited UConn for First Night and came away very impressed. “It was great! I loved how the fans showed so much love and support for the Men’s and Women’s teams! I’m really lost for words because everything was great,” he explained. Other schools that were after him hard were Kansas, Georgia, Memphis, Clemson, and Georgia Tech among many others.
As for how he came to a decision Will, also called Turtle, had this to say, “I had to spend a lot of time in prayer and I felt as if Christ lead me to UConn.” He’s a very religious kid just like Ollie is and that helped them form a great relationship. Jackson told various other reporters that he really liked how Ollie kept recruiting him despite the injury. Other programs had backed off of him some or completely stopped recruiting him during that time.
Jackson mentioned various things that sold him on UConn, “I love their style of play, the school has great tradition, and the coaches are great people. I feel as if they will make me a better person and basketball player. Also, their fan support.” The coaches were a big part in why he committed so I had him explain upon that a little. “I love the way they have keep everything in UConn like a family because all of them have already coached or played at UConn. I also like how coach Ollie is strong in his beliefs,” Jackson explained.
Standing as 6′ 4 1/2″ Will can be a very versatile player in Ollie’s offensive system. He could play multiple positions as well as defend multiple spots as well. I asked him how he sees himself fitting in and what the staff wants him to come in and do, “I see myself as a combo guard who can score when needed and also get everybody involved like a true point guard. They [the coaches] want me to get everybody involved because they feel as if I’m a great passer. Also, push the ball and also to score and be aggressive. They want me to be a combo guard.”
Jackson also has something to say to all UConn fans, “I want them to know that no matter what I will always give my all and that I believe that I can do all things through whom strengthens me! Stay humble and stay hungry!” He already is ten toes in with coach and UConn. UConn is lucky to have another recruit that is both a great basketball player but a great person as well.
