Update on UConn’s Top Point Guard Target
|Quentin Snider is a 6′ 1″ 166 lbs. point guard out of Louisville, Kentucky. He currently attends Ballard High School in Louisville. Ever since Quentin de-committed from Louisville he has been receiving tons of interest from some of the top schools in the country. One of the first schools to offer him was UConn. Coach Ollie offered Quentin during the first phone call he made to him. Ever since then UConn has been after him and by the looks of everything he will be UConn’s top choice at the point guard position until he commits.
On Friday I had the chance to talk with Quentin Snider’s dad Scott. We talked about UConn and I got an update on Quentin’s recruitment.
Many UConn fans have compared Quentin to current UConn point guard Shabazz Napier. They play the games in similar fashions with the way they score and get others involved. Scott Snider talked about what Quentin does well on the court. “Quentin’s a real good ball handler and is the type of guard that likes to attack the rim. He’s also able to get out of double teams and kicking it out the open man or try to take it and score. He can go off the dribble really good and he’ll come off and pull for three off the dribble. He can come off picks in a pick and roll but he can also pull up if the defender comes off him,” Scott explained. Clearly what Quentin is doing is working. He’s a consensus top 50 recruit in 2014 and is always one of the best players on the court. I then asked his dad about his leadership skills. Having the ability to lead a team can take you from a good team to an elite team. Scott Snider said, “He definitely takes a leadership role. He not a real vocal leader and that’s one thing that he needs to work on. He leads by the way he plays. He’ll kind of come out and he’ll feel the game out and get his teammates involved early but as the game goes along he gets more aggressive.”
As for his recruitment it’s been widely reported that he will be taking a couple of official visits and unofficial visits, with one of the official visits being UConn. Quentin’s dad confirmed the visits to me on Friday. “Right now we are taking visits to UCLA, UConn [both officially], Illinois, Memphis, and Cincinnati [unofficially] but we are still talking to a few other schools as well.” Among those other schools is Indiana. He was asked to visit Bloomington this weekend but Quentin and his dad are not going to be making the trip, which was reported by Steve Jones. Currently Quentin has no favorites and all of the schools are equal. His dad added this about favorites, “Not right now. We want to go on all of the visits and get to know the coaches face to face. It’s hard to determine that just over the phone.”
As for what they are going to be looking forward to on their visit to UConn Scott noted, “Just talking with coach Ollie and seeing how he would use Quentin and the opportunities there are for playing time. Then we want to talk to the academic advisor and see the different kind of majors he will get a chance to get into and what the schools main programs are.”
I also asked a question that singled out UConn from the other schools. Quentin’s dad explained what made UConn a good school for Quentin. “Really just Coach Ollie. Quentin’s always liked Kemba Walker and they’ve always had good guards play there. Just talking with coach Ollie when Quentin first opened up his recruitment and they just hit it off and when I talked to him I could tell he was just the kind of coach that could gets the most out of Quentin,” Scott Snider stated.
I then questioned Scott about his and Quentin’s relationship with coach Ollie. Like many other recruits I have talked to Scott said it was good. Ollie seems to be very good at establishing quality relationships with recruits. Here’s what Quentin’s dad said, “I’ve talked with him a few times. We’ve gotten to know him just about as good as you can over the phone. We’re coming for an official visit the weekend of September 20th and we will get to know him a lot better then.”
Look for Snider to be a major target for the staff going forward. He’s visiting the weekend of September 20th-22nd and the staff is going to go hard at him.
