Hartford, Marquette Earn Bids To WNIT
|Jen Rizzotti and her Hartford Hawks team will be playing Harvard in the first round of the Women’s NIT on Thursday, March 21st at 7:00pm UHart’s Chase Family Arena. This is the ninth consecutive year that the Hawks have played in the post-season and the fourth time in the WNIT.
Hartford finished it’s regular season 19-10 and was the #2 seed in the America East Tournament. After winning its first two games handily, the Hawks couldn’t pull the upset over top seeded Albany, finishing the tournament with a 21-11 record.
The Ivy League runner-up Harvard, which holds a 20-8 record, is hardly a stranger to Hartford. The two teams played a home-and-home series that ended last season with Hartford a 61-52 winner.
Another familiar team in the WNIT is Marquette of the Big East. The Golden Eagles play host to Northern Iowa on Friday at 7:oo pm CT. The WNIT is a nice consolation prize for a team that went 16-15 overall and 7-9 in the Big East. Its opponent holds a 16-16 record and finished 10-8 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
Marquette’s history in the WNIT is spotty. It lost in the second round in 2010, only two years after beating Michigan State for the title in 2008.
