This has to change. Hopefully as we get comfortable in the new defense the TOs will follow.

They need to change the targeting rule. Saw it called in other games. If the QB slides in the last milisecond the tackler can't avoid it.
My son suggested something like a halo rule. If you don't commit to sliding when there is sufficient room between you and the defender, hitting the QB shouldn't be a penalty. Too many penalties are defenders committing themselves to hit a QB in the chest or midsection, and then after they commit the QB changes the plane of his body by starting a slide.

If you want protection, don't try to get an extra 2 or 3 yards.

Exactly. The law of physics makes it virtually impossible to change path once off the ground. A well intended rule going too far in protecting people in a game that requires constant movement and collisions.

It's the first 2 games. I'm not overly worried about it. They are starting a new scheme and needs time to adjust to full game speed. I think Brock will have them improve every game and we'll see some better plays down the stretch.

Completely agree with this. It's seemingly happened in almost every game I've these first couple of weeks - however, noticed it wasn't much of an issue in the NFL this weekend. Pro players more disciplined or more used to it maybe?

Coaches need to tell their kids to get down too. Stop trying to get every yard you can or slide late trying to get a late hit call. It's not worth a targeting call if you're gonna miss two weeks in concussion protocol. The slide is there to protect the quarterback.. so if you're gonna give yourself up, give yourself up and protect yourself. If you're sliding late, you're putting yourself in harms way and the 15 yds. isn't really worth it in the big picture.

The pro QBs are focused on getting down before they are hit. Not squeezing an extra 3 yards out of the run.

I think perhaps if the defense didn’t keep them to 8 three and outs there would have been more opportunities. Game one perhaps would have resulted in some turnovers had there not been so many missed tackles. Not too worried about that stat as of yet.

I think this is the big difference. When contact has happened it's been with late slides or thought the other way early into the slide. It's a hard pull up when you're going that hard.

On there hand I can see the "there is no such thing as good contact" being enforced because head injuries are so important and maybe players just have to adapt one has to accept that you don't know if the qb will stay upright or slide so you can't lunge at all because they might slide.

I don't know. I don't think the current regime is fair to the defenders per se.

Edit: I think the nfl is trying to get their qbs to avoid all injury. I think college is ok with the game of chicken for a few more yards. Much more pressure to win in college than the nfl. The nfl has become a manicured product

They were conservative week 1 but more blitzes week 2. Hopefully even more as the season moves along.

genuine question:

for those of you who are not too worried about our defense - how long is your leash?
4 games?
12 games?

i fear we are just slow again, as we've been in past years. In 2022 we crashed/zero'd in on the ball better, which IMO is the top reason (OLine play a close 2nd) we ended up 6-6. It was not our offense. I am not seeing that so far, and 2 games is a lot of snaps. I hope to see a radical improvement but i am not betting on it.

Talking about our defense this year without talking about the injuries and suspensions due to targeting calls isn't looking at the whole picture.

I'm looking forward to actually seeing our entire starting defensive lineup, hopefully in the next 1 to 2 weeks...

There's a lot of college QB's taking some pretty big hits thanks to Kenny Pickett and his fake slide.

leash before admitting this defensive personnel is just bad and it's not a "breaking in" issue (IF it's bad; i'm not saying it is flat out bad just yet - but we've seen this type of early season performance before, and it didn't improve over the 12 games).

in 2 games, I do not think we've demonstrated the necessary athleticism so far, to say we're gonna keep up with competent FBS-level offenses. I hope dearly, that I am wrong.
