At a minimum, you always want the D to get more TOs than targeting penalties. This has to change. Hopefully as we get comfortable in the new defense the TOs will follow.
The way targeting is being called, that might be challenging. At a minimum, you always want the D to get more TOs than targeting penalties.
My son suggested something like a halo rule. If you don't commit to sliding when there is sufficient room between you and the defender, hitting the QB shouldn't be a penalty. Too many penalties are defenders committing themselves to hit a QB in the chest or midsection, and then after they commit the QB changes the plane of his body by starting a slide. They need to change the targeting rule. Saw it called in other games. If the QB slides in the last milisecond the tackler can't avoid it.
Exactly. The law of physics makes it virtually impossible to change path once off the ground. A well intended rule going too far in protecting people in a game that requires constant movement and collisions. My son suggested something like a halo rule. If you want protection, don't try to get an extra 2 or 3 yards.
Completely agree with this. It's seemingly happened in almost every game I've these first couple of weeks - however, noticed it wasn't much of an issue in the NFL this weekend. Pro players more disciplined or more used to it maybe? My son suggested something like a halo rule. The pro QBs are focused on getting down before they are hit. Not squeezing an extra 3 yards out of the run.Completely agree with this. I think this is the big difference. When contact has happened it's been with late slides or thought the other way early into the slide. It's a hard pull up when you're going that hard. The pro QBs are focused on getting down before they are hit. Not squeezing an extra 3 yards out of the run.
They were conservative week 1 but more blitzes week 2. Hopefully even more as the season moves along. It's the first 2 games. I'm not overly worried about it. They are starting a new scheme and needs time to adjust to full game speed. I think Brock will have them improve every game and we'll see some better plays down the stretch.
leash on what? before we bench the defense for another defense?genuine question:
for those of you who are not too worried about our defense - how long is your leash?
4 games?
12 games?
i fear we are just slow again, as we've been in past years. In 2022 we crashed/zero'd in on the ball better, which IMO is the top reason (OLine play a close 2nd) we ended up 6-6. It was not our offense. I am not seeing that so far, and 2 games is a lot of snaps. I hope to see a radical improvement but i am not betting on it.
Talking about our defense this year without talking about the injuries and suspensions due to targeting calls isn't looking at the whole picture.genuine question:

There's a lot of college QB's taking some pretty big hits thanks to Kenny Pickett and his fake slide. My son suggested something like a halo rule. leash before admitting this defensive personnel is just bad and it's not a "breaking in" issue (IF it's bad; i'm not saying it is flat out bad just yet - but we've seen this type of early season performance before, and it didn't improve over the 12 games).leash on what? before we bench the defense for another defense?
