9 eligible teams snubbed by bowls: CMU, Toledo (MAC), FAU (CUSA), SJSU (MWC), USA, Texas St, Troy, UL Monroe, WKU (Sun).

That's tough. For sure a couple of teams that would be favored against a half dozen selects. Mostly a pick-em situation though.

very tough indeed...should be noted Toledo ended at 7 & 5 with tough loss to Akron and WKU finished at 8 & 4 with notable wins over Kentucky and Navy.
Perhaps, they also don't travel as well as schools selected...but we're assured that P5 politics and ESPN played into it.....

Actually 10 teams were uninvited, as UTSA (7-5 of CUSA) was also snubbed. There were 80 eligible teams for 70 spots. This demonstrates the importance of tie-ins to the lesser conferences in the new landscape of college football. The MAC, CUSA and Sun Belt combined for 22 eligible teams, but had only 11 bowl tie-ins. Last week, the Sun Belt tried to buy its way into a couple of bowls, but negotiations failed.

A Moutain West team being shut out is sobering. Could an American Conference team be shut out in the next 5 years? That is not impossible, but not very likely, as, with 3 bowls added, there will be 76 spots from 2014-2019. But with 12 teams in the American(11 in 2014), and only 6 tie-ins in 2014, 2015, and 2017, an American team or 2 could be scrambling.
