WSU pulled Akok away from the hoop on defense neutralizing his shot blocking. We did not adjust to that by having him guard the center until we went small.

Polley’s injury is an opportunity for Sidney to get out of the doghouse. So far, so good. He made some athletic plays and minimized mental mistakes. After a good first half Hurley waited almost half the second half before playing him. Then WOW!!!!!! Hit the big 3 late and did other good things.

We were in the double bonus for almost 5 minutes I. The first half but did not capitalize with numerous misses from the line. Again, more work is needed in practice on foul shots. Lots of easy to fix mechanical issues and Josh standing at the line for what seemed like 15 seconds during a stoppage rather than walk off the line and come back to it - easy to fix. But, Josh hung tough and knocked down two big ones in OT. Indeed.

Gilbert did some good things but again some real head scratching plays that a guy at his stage of his career should not be making including the last play of the first half where he basically ran the clock out after we got momentum on Sidney’s dunk.

Chief needs to be careful not to over analyze. We need shooters and so far we haven’t recruited any except maybe RJ Cole. You can’t win if you can’t shoot.

Good comeback, Chief likes the effort. Tough to win when your center leads the team in assists at the end of the first half with two and the other team shoots 20% better from the field.
Akok never got involved in the game until late why do most of our posts opportunities go to Josh? Time to run more plays for Akok.

Chief thought Vital played a very good game. Josh needs to do more with two hands on put backs. The one hand stuff isn’t working.

WSU is one of the better coached teams you will see at XL. They played with a purpose, took advantage of our weaknesses (post defense and our guard’s height) and took Akok out of the game. They defended well, ran crisp downhill plays to scoring opportunities and made us pay at the line.

WSU was vulnerable to the press and we played better, at least today, without Josh in the lineup.

The officiating crew sucked during regulation and overtime. Our foul shooting compared to theirs was even worse. Foul shooting, a lack of 3’s and AG’s wild turnovers were the difference. Too bad because he played great on the ball defense today.

Thought Vital played great. What’s the deal with the Vital save that he was clearly in bounds but WSU got the ball. Early on we got momentum and lost it, the culprit for that was Gilbert.

Nice summary, Chief. Agree. Concerned about the lack of shooters now and in the future. Can't win by missing so many shots. But we also miss layups. That looks like it will improve next year. Players got to be gym rats with a plan.

Don't really agree "we" lost game. Sure we a very imperfect team and we took lots of free throws but does that mean WSU didn't constantly foul us?

When it mattered the officials made 2 very bad calls in OT's (CV out if bounds & AG charge) that if either were called correctly we win. In real time it was obvious to broadcasters that CV saved the ball to AG and he wasn't out. If that call is correct we win probably don't you think?

So the narrative becomes what an amazing all-time comeback, not we lost because of AG turnovers.

Also worth noting Hurley finally decided to full court zone press which gave WS fits and turnovers. I’ve asked for a while with their speed why we don’t do this more, at least it generates a different form of offense..

We got screwed and we also had no luck whatsoever. Very tough loss. I love playing Bouknight, sid and akok together. When these guys are on court together we are an elite team in terms of athleticism. We aren’t going to be an elite shooting team with any lineup so this is the way to go.

Story of the game for me was missed 3 point shots. In one sequence early second half we took a 3 on 7 out of 8 possessions (6 in a row) and missed them all. What happened to Bouknight’s shot? Also could have won this game at the FT line. Missed way too many.

I have continued to believe that Sid is a guy who doesn’t respond to the critical, hard coaching style. Some guys do. Sid needs a coach who has confidence in him to play well. He put up a solid effort today on both ends. Something to build on.

Wichita State is so well coached. You simply do not go on runs against these guys. They make a play, a stop, a clutch hoop, something to halt that momentum. So fundamentally sound. They never let the last possession impact the other end or the next one. Unlike our guys who get emotional and do dumb things.

The officials blew the call. They looked at the play, but because two players weren't fighting for the ball and the question was who touched it last, it wasn't reviewable. Therefore, by the book because it wasn't "reviewable, it wasn't reversible - even though by watching it they knew they blew it.

We really need shooters because our best is graduating and our second best may not start the season. Where are our shooters next year?

I would say CV and Bouknight were our two best players. Sidney was next. If Sidney would be receptive to coaching - he could be a really good player. He actually has a decent looking shot, the best first step on the team along with Bouknight and that explosiveness that can change games.
AG needs to learn who to distribute to and where. With his speed he can help us but be quick and don’t hurry per John Wooden.

Agree. I do ‘t think we can do as a steady diet but we should press more often than we do.

Well said. Nice to have you back. It’s mind boggling that Gilbert makes these same mistakes over and over - was watching the game with my dad and told him before the last play of the first half “I bet AG plays with the ball too much and waits too long to get a shot off”. We saw what happened. He did play great defense but needs to minimize the chronic mistakes and improve his free throw shooting. We need him playing at his best to win these games.

Polley's injury is a double whammy for 2020 in this regard. not only do we lose our best shooter, but with Sid going from the doghouse to presumably playing around 20 mpg going forwards, the odds of adding a 4th player (who can shoot) might have disappeared. hopefully Jackson and Wilson prove to be the most athletic SF combo in the big east, instead.

Not having enough players who shoot the ball well has been going on since 2014. Unreal bad luck losing Polley who was our best pure shooter and looked to have turned a corner.
We have no plan to utilize Akok in the offense. So he drifts. How about running the baseline?
Carlton, just so frustrating to see all the lost opportunities. At least 2 chances off good drives by our guards where he fumbled the pass in the block and we lost possession.
When Carlton shoots free throws he steps over the line after he is done shooting. My wife points out he does not use his legs. Who is coaching him? Teams can play hack a Josh at the end of games.
The team played their hearts out. Vital is sick of losing. I felt bad for him today. He would compliment better point guards nicely. He really put the team on his back in the second half.

It’s basically groundhogs day rooting for this program for the last four years or so... although we keep getting close to turning a corner. Until then it’s groundhogs day. We’ll show some signs of life and that we want to win, only to disappoint. I feel like a knife keeps stabbing me in the chest, then pulled out and bandaged up for some relief, and then stabs me again with a turning motion. I’m worried we will lose the next two. Please win one?

Great read Chief. But I still don't understand the save Vital made but the ball was awarded to WS?

They called him out of bounds. He was definitely not out of bounds, and it wasn’t even that close.

But they did review it only doubling down on their mistake!! These refs made at least three other bad calls where Gillen and Lappas were already calling for the make up calls!

They couldn't review it because he went out of bounds by himself. If he went out fighting for it with a Wichita player they could have reviewed it. They were reviewing the clock they said.
