EDITED. I was not aware that toad455 was tracking attendance also. Seeing some numbers different from mine made me recheck things. I apparently missed adding a couple games to the spreadsheet. LA still in the top spot.

At the All-Star break and heading down the home stretch - huge impactful games in the offing.

Notable in the past couple weeks were:
  • the Lynx draw nearly 18,000 versus Indiana in a 1pm July 18th "Camp Day" promotion (about 8,000 above average). The new Lynx record takes the top single game attendance spot from the Sparks (13,502 versus Dallas).
  • same afternoon, the Sky with a "School Day" sell-out topping 10,000 (almost 4,000 above average). Moves Chicago above Connecticut to the #5 spot.
  • These special mid-week, afternoon games draw heavily but I don't know how they stack up financially due to reduced price/subsidized/give-away tickets.
  • Also, the Mercury draw 11,473 versus the Lynx in a regular Saturday night game (5th 2018 home game above 10,000).

Everybody likes a winner. Notice the teams with the largest attendance numbers are the best teams in the league. The Liberty needs new ownership that can hopefully keep them in NYC, and if not in MSG, in a local venue that is large enough and worthy of their use. If not, relocated them to a market that would welcome and support a WNBA franchise. The All-Star game last week was a huge success drawing 16,000 fans to the arena, and millions more via TV.

We know the W will never rival the NBA in popularity or attendance, but it does have a loyal fan base, and it's nice to see the numbers holding steady. These numbers also challenges the notion asserted by cynics and trolls that "no one cares about the WNBA".

That's great stuff for the Lynx. I wouldn't put it past them to pull another championship rabbit out of their hat this year. Their fans sure deserve it. The All-Star game in Minneapolis was a raging success, with attendance of about 16,000, I believe.

It will be interesting to see how many attend next year's All Star game in Las Vegas. I wonder what capacity is at the Mandalay Bay Events Center? It's no Talking Stick Resort Arena, but it looked pretty big when I was there for a game in June.

Speaking of which, it will also be interesting to see how much the Aces can build on this year's attendance figures. I'd want to see them averaging a good 6,000 next season.

Finally, I'm surprised Seattle came in below 8,000. Key Arena always looks packed whenever I watch on League Pass. Those games with Dick Fain and Elise Woodward on the call are appointment television for me. :)

RANK. TEAM(# games) - 2018 Average [+/- 2017 Average)
1. Los Angeles Sparks(14) - 10,088 (-1,263)
2. Minnesota Lynx(13) - 9,955 (-452)
3. Phoenix Mercury(11) - 9,783 (-130)
4. Seattle Storm(14) - 7,310 (-394)
5. Chicago Sky(14) - 6,329 (-254)
6. Connecticut Sun(11) - 6,298 (-430)
7. Indiana Fever(13) - 6,064 (-1,474)
8. Washington Mystics(13) - 5,970 (-1,801)
9. Las Vegas Aces(12) - 5,207 (-1,179)
10. Dallas Wings(13) - 4,752 (+880)
11. Atlanta Dream(12) - 4,111 (-341)
12. New York Liberty(13) - 2,187 (-7,702)
WNBA AVERAGE(153) - 6,516 (-1,200)

Note that the 2018 average (6,516) is through current games, while the 2017 average (7,716) is for the entire season - and not where the respective teams were at the same point last year.

A number of key points, however, that we should keep in mind when viewing the above attendance numbers:
  • Without New York (and the Westchester arena), the league is averaging almost 6918 fans per game for 2018.
  • As of July 16. 2017, WNBA attendance was 7,123 per game. The final number for 2017 was 7,716 per game.
  • In 2017, the WNBA registered its highest total attendance (1,574,078) and highest average attendance (7,716) since 2011. So any drop from 2017 is not necessarily a bad thing, as 2017 was such a banner year.
  • It is important to remember is more important than tickets distributed, and we have no access to comparative revenue numbers.
  • Dallas plays its games at the College Park Center in Arlington, Texas. The capacity of the venue is 7,000. This means that Dallas' attendance (4,752 per game) is 67.885 percent of capacity. Last year, for example, Dallas averaged 3,872 fans per game (about 55 percent of capacity).
  • Remember, Tulsa moved to Dallas after the 2015 season. A sellout for a basketball game at BOK Center (Tulsa's home venue) was 17.839. Tulsa averaged between 4,812 and 5,566 fans per game in its six season, with 5,168 fans per game in its last season. Dallas is averaging a much bigger percentage of arena capacity, even though the actual raw attendance number of fans per game is less than the last year in Tulsa.
  • By contrast, Seattle plays its games in KeyArena, which has a basketball capacity of 15,354. But for most Storm games, the lower bowl is the only section open for sales. The capacity of the lower bowl is around 9,000 per game.
And probably the most important point of all...
  • For two franchises, costs are relative -- and lower than those of other franchises. With Las Vegas and Connecticut, the owners of the WNBA franchises (Mohegan Sun for CT, MGM Resorts International for LV) also own the respective arenas in which those franchises play (Mohegan Sun Arena for CT, Mandalay Bay Events Center for LV). And since both of these are attached to/part of casinos/resorts, there is already the "infrastructure" in place -- e.g., food/beverage/concessions, security, etc. And I highly doubt the ownership is paying rent for the arena, as it would be paying rent to itself. As a result, not only are the costs of operation for these two franchises is significantly less that the costs of operation for other WNBA franchises, but the ability to make a profit is much easier. And even if attendance is not a huge percentage of capacity, if the attendees for WNBA games stay at the resort, spend time in the casino, etc., the franchise can recover any costs that way.

Frankly, if James Dolan is going to sell the franchise and relocate - which I think would be terrible for the league, considering the WNBA league office is in New York - then it needs to consider an owner/ownership group that owns the venue in which the team will play.

As an example, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City, New Jersey was formerly the Trump Taj Mahal. After a bankruptcy, it was purchased by the Seminole Tribe of Floirda (through its Hard Rock International brand) and converted to the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino brand. It reopened on June 28, 2018. And as part of the re-opening, the attached Etess Arena re-opened - which has a capacity of about 7,000.

Watching the Mystics Dream game and it literally looks like 600 people are there. Embarrasing it’s so empty. They’ll pad the attendance numbers for the game. Can’t fool the players. They know no one in Atlanta cares. Team is on an 8 game win streak and Atlanta mkt still has no interest.

I am amazed at all the eridution and grinding hard work it took to amass all of this meaningless data. The least of our WNBA teams draw far more fans than the most star backed teams abroad who pay there top draw players beau coup bucks. How can we get major corporate sponsors to adopt these teams and write it off as cheap change in their advertising budget???

Yeah, the arena looks very empty.
