Staying in the winners bracket helps to keep the pitching staff on the fresher, less used side. When UConn was in the AAC, this was especially important in their 8 team tournament. With the four team set up that the Big East has, there are less games to be played, so it probably is not as paramount. Still staying in the winners bracket certainly has its advantages.
