Of course, I was interested to see how the streak and the rout of USF would be covered in the mainstream.
Even in venues which are generally appreciative of UConn exploits, Mike and Mike this morning is very instructive.
1) First time they read off the accomplishment from SC, Greenberg was basically like "Of course UConn what do you expect?"
2) Second read a half hour later. Apparently Greenberg seemed to pay a little more attention and realized it was a 20th tanked team and the differential was 65 pts and his face became a little more animated. Golic gave his agreement smile and they both look dumbfounded . Then greenberg said " Well, what can be said that has not already been said. Can't add anything"
Then they went back to talking for a half hour on why Golic was charged 2 more dollars for ordering off the kids menu.
The lesson learned is that in the mainstream media, UConn has transcended sports and does not need to be covered. Its just a fact of life like the sky is blue.
No effort is made to understand how it is accomplished and why this accomplishment with this group of young players is so special.
On the other hand, if Mike and Mike get to reverse the overcharge on the kids menu, that is a real service to america. I love the kids menu but never had the courage to order from it.
