Joyce Edwards:
20.3 ppg, 59.8% FG, 6.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 2.0 steals, 1.3 blocks, team is in 1st place at 9-1

Mikayla Blakes:
25.1 ppg, 45.1% FG, 3.9 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 3.1 steals, team is in 3rd place at 8-2

Madison Booker:
19.1 ppg, 51.5% FG, 6.9 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.5 steals, team is in 4th place at 7-2

Cotie McMahon:
19.7 ppg, 48.7% FG, 5.9 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.2 steals, team is in 6th place at 6-3


Right now I'd pick Blakes but Edwards and Booker have great cases too. I don't think Edwards in particular is talked about enough right now. Lots of really great standouts in the conference this season.
 
I went with Mikayla Blakes also, primarily because I think she is so essential to her team's success, much more so than any of the others.
 
I cannot answer until the end of the regular season at the earliest. Maybe post tournament. Much will depend on her role in and her team’s success ( though she need not play for the conference check). And this stretch run is very important.

Blake’s is a legitimate candidate but she needs help elevate Vandy to a top four conference level. It takes more than being the leading scorer!
 
I would have thought Booker was a lock to win the award before season and it probably will be her or Blakes.

I don't think Edwards really has a great case, but 1st team SEC should be locked and maybe an All American team might be in reach.
 
It will be Joyce if South Carolina finishes Top 2 and she remains the leading scorer on the team.

Blakes won't win if Vandy doesn't finish in the Top 5. Their schedule makes it unlikely that they will finish that high.

I think we can all agree that Booker's chances of repeating are diminishing.

Booker still has the best shot unless she and Texas take a tumble down the stretch. Sure, she has had a few bad games, but so has Joyce .’

If I had to pick today, I'd pick Blakes.

No, we don't all agree that Booker's chances of repeating are diminishing. I think if she has 20+ scoring games against upcoming opponents Kentucky, Vanderbilt, and Tennessee and Texas wins all those games, she'll remain in the thick of things.
 
Booker's stats reflect only 10 points against dreadful A&M when she played a season-low 24 minutes. Every other SEC game she's scored at least 15 points, including 24 points in losses at LSU and at South Carolina. A&M would have been the game where she could have padded her scoring stats a bit, I guess.

Have to have Beers on there somewhere. Although I think the all-SEC team is smaller than other conferences.

McGill is an all-SEC talent, but team success might keep her off. Higginbotham at Arkansas last year led the league in scoring and didn’t make a team. Vanderbilt was 8th and Khamil Pierre didn’t make one either.

Again, I don't think Booker will repeat as SEC POY. She's third right now, so she's got a lot of ground to cover.

Booker has done nothing to show that she's got the best case. To me, it's a two-way race between the two sophomores. They'll have to slip to allow Booker back in it.

I think she's behind Blakes but the gap isn't large at this point if Vandy struggles down the stretch or if Texas can tie for SEC crown. Booker's numbers are very comparable to Edwards right now and she's been playing better in close SEC games than Joyce has.

While some of these are South Carolina milestones, I think they're pretty significant when you look at how Staley likes her teams to spread out the love between all players:
  1. Fastest player to 1000 points scored in the Dawn Staley era, beating A'ja by 4 games.
  2. Top 15 in the nation in both scoring and efficiency. #3 in the SEC in both categories. She has better scoring and efficiency numbers than Booker.
  3. Best player on the highest ranked SEC team.
  4. We beat Texas in SEC play.
  5. 13 games of 20+ points scored and could be the first since A'ja to average 20+ points.

Neither is Booker. She is 39/88 against SEC ranked foes, good for 44.3%. Not far off from Edwards who is at 46.5% (20/43). Prior to the recent Tennessee blowout Edwards was actually sub 40% in SEC play (13/33).
